Our client is seeking a Technical Underwriting Lead to be based in Guernsey or Jersey. This full-time role is pivotal in leading the organisation's technical underwriting function across personal and commercial lines, ensuring decisions align with delegated authority agreements and contribute to profitable growth. The successful candidate will hold the highest level of underwriting authority and will work closely with capacity providers to shape the underwriting strategy and pricing framework.
Job Duties
- Underwriting complex commercial and personal lines risks and acting as an escalation point for technical decisions
- Developing and maintaining underwriting, product, and pricing guides and frameworks
- Managing the delegation of underwriting authority and ensuring compliance across teams
- Liaising with capacity providers through regular forums to strengthen collaboration and stay informed on market trends
- Leading internal and external audits within underwriting teams
- Reviewing policy wordings to ensure accuracy, compliance, and alignment with legislation
- Providing technical referrals, guidance, and on-the-job training to underwriting colleagues
- Preparing reports and input for board packs and performance reviews
- Supporting portfolio management and providing expert advice to the underwriting team
- Collaborating with risk control surveyors to ensure technical standards and risk management best practices
Job Requirements
- Minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent), including Maths and English at Grade C or above
- Significant experience in underwriting across personal and commercial lines
- Strong technical knowledge of underwriting practices, pricing, and product governance
- Proven ability to develop and manage underwriting philosophies and risk selection frameworks
- Experience working within delegated authority and compliance frameworks
- Excellent communication and analytical skills
