Purpose of the role

The primary role of the post holder is to support the Head of Vessel Operations & ILT Manager in delivering business performance essential to:

  • Delivering Safety objectives and performance
  • Driving operational excellence
  • Developing an effective team across vessel and landside operations
  • Monitoring revenue and controlling costs
  • Deployment of resource
  • Delivering customer service and excellent operational performance
  • Driving a culture of engagement

Supporting the Head of Vessel Operations & ILT, the post holder will be responsible for overseeing the daily operations, which will require a clear understanding of safety regulations, strong leadership, excellent organisational skills and good logistics management.

Expectations

The role will require the post holder to have an inherent ability to handle and prioritise multiple tasks, projects and change in a fast-paced, moving operational environment. This role holder will have a flexible approach to working hours. The role requires a dynamic and eager individual with a can-do attitude and willingness, ability to drive change whilst ensuring KPIs and service levels are maintained. The post holder will be tenacious, persistent and a completer/finisher.

Main Responsibilities

  • Work with the Head of Vessel Operations & ILT Manager in monitoring all statutory requirements relating to the business unit whilst identifying any risk of non-compliance
  • Identify EHS trends across business unit, ensuring proactive interaction and resolution, ensuring the achievement of EHS standards through Visible Felt Leadership
  • Responsible for the planning and delivering of operational resource forecasting and implementation whilst liaising with Resource and Commodity business units on a daily basis to understand the day-to-day operational priorities
  • Support the Head of Vessel Operations & ILT with talent management across business unit including a clear development, progression, training and succession planning strategy for direct reports
  • Ensure role profiles within the Business Unit have optimum accountability and responsibility and that employees have the relevant skills and support to enable the business to succeed
  • Support the Head of Vessel Operations & ILT Manager to deliver EBITDA targets which meets or exceeds annual budgets
  • Make recommendations to the Head of Vessel Operations & ILT Manager on improvement, efficiency and innovations relating to overall improvement of the Business Unit
  • Delivery and management of internal and external business relationships
  • Measure Customer Agreements against business strategy and targets providing the Port Director / Deputy Port Director regular KPI metrics and forecasts
  • Build positive relationships with Commercial teams and key external partners, including customers, suppliers, shipping lines and agents
  • Ensure efficient, safe operational delivery and practices to deliver optimum customer services
  • Ensure controls are in place for the complete and accurate billing and collection of revenue as determined by the agreements
  • Actively promote an inclusive culture and help drive equity, diversity and inclusion through the Business Unit operations
  • Participate in regular management meetings to discuss operational performance and strategic initiatives

People

The post holder has direct reporting responsibility for Team Leaders and indirect responsibility for Chargehands, Port Operatives and oversight of third party labour colleagues.

Assets

The post holder is responsible for assets on which they work, responsible for the equipment they use within the work environment, and responsible for the equipment used within their direct and indirect reporting lines.

Finance

The post holder will commit to making significant impact on Operational efficiency and productivity.

Decision Making

The post holder will be required to report specific strategic recommendations to the Head of Vessel Operations & ILT including any observations and lessons learnt. The post holder will be required to make day-to-day straightforward job-related decisions. They will complete tasks in line with the plan communicated by the Head of Vessel Operations Manager to meet operational requirements whilst delivering productivity and cost performance. The post holder must use their initiative to solve problems, deliver solutions and drive the business unit forward with the ability to react to operational situations in a timely manner required at all times.

Person Specification

For this role, we ideally seek:

  • Experience in a Port operation or similar complex operation
  • Safety qualification minimum of IOSH certification
  • Strong knowledge of safety regulations and standards
  • Capable of publishing and maintaining Safe Systems of Work and Risk Assessments
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to manage and motivate diverse teams
  • Excellent problem solving and decision making abilities
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • High proficiency in using Microsoft Office
  • Must hold a full UK driving licence

Ability to present/communicate complex and analytical information to internal and external stakeholders whilst facilitating a common understanding/appreciation of the content at an individual level. Communicate all operational developments/changes and align consistency to a common strategy through face-to-face direct workforce communications. Communicate with all stakeholders (internal/external) to resolve issues.
