We're looking for an Associate Engineer to join our Design team based in London. Our 100-strong Construction Engineering capability brings together a team of talented civil, structural and geotechnical engineers from a range of backgrounds, combining complex analysis, spatial design and an eye for the practical to deliver buildable solutions on site. We specialise in reimagining permanent designs to make them more buildable, designing temporary works and traffic management solutions, advising on the procedural management of temporary works, construction materials, ground engineering and surveying. Kier Design are a top-25 engineering consultancy, delivering a wide range of services across all sectors of the built environment, providing construction-focused, innovative and sustainable solutions.

Location: SE1, London.

Hours: 40 hours per week, with some flexibility.

Responsibilities:

  • Agree the technical requirements of the client remit, ensuring it is fully understood, questioning and challenging where necessary.
  • Lead the development of fee proposals for review in accordance with delegated authority policy.
  • Organise and lead the day‑to‑day workload of engineers and technical staff within the design team.
  • Ensure technical compliance of the design to the remit and compliance with applicable legal requirements and company policies, including CDM Regulations, the Kier SHE Management System (SHEMS) and the design Quality Management System (QMS).
  • Oversee and contribute to the production of design deliverables, including calculations, drawings, reports and design risk assessments.
  • Identify and assess technical opportunities for value engineering, implementing them with suitable approval.
  • Develop and build positive relationships with the client, design and site teams to support contractual obligations and meet or exceed Kier Design and customer expectations.
  • Represent projects at client and progress meetings, manage financial and commercial aspects of the project, monitoring progress against agreed programme and budget.
  • Provide leadership to direct and indirect reports, support the Engineering Manager and Head of Construction Engineering, implement and comply with Kier policies and functional governance.
  • Conduct staff inductions and performance reviews, manage team workload, maximise utilisation and project efficiency, ensure timely completion and submission of timesheets, review timesheets and approve time off for direct reports.
  • Recognise, promote and implement best practice within Kier Design, develop a culture of excellence and act as an ambassador for Kier Design, ensuring it is the consultant of first choice and embodies the values of Kier.
  • Understand social, cultural, global and environmental responsibilities of professional engineering, promote sustainable development, stay abreast of design developments in health & safety, innovation, sustainability, diversity, and implement them as appropriate.
  • Maintain continuing professional development, improve skills in management or a design/technical/professional specialism, maintain membership of professional bodies, contribute to industry best practice groups, develop digital competency as per the Kier Design Digital Competency Framework.
  • Develop and review engineering methods and software, including design or assessment spreadsheets and calculation templates, to increase overall quality and efficiency.
  • Market Kier Design competencies to generate new or repeat business whenever possible.

Qualifications:

  • Chartered member of a relevant professional institution (e.g., CEng, MICE) with practical industry experience.
  • Experience in a similar role with significant relevant experience at this level.
  • Proven experience of designing temporary works.
