About The Role
This senior appointment suits a chartered or near-chartered structural engineer eager to lead projects across Exeter and the wider South West. Working full time on a hybrid basis, the successful candidate takes ownership of a varied portfolio, steering schemes from early feasibility through to completion on site. Responsibilities span technical design, project leadership and acting as a trusted contact for clients and design teams. Strong knowledge of relevant codes, analysis software and collaboration with architects and contractors is essential. The position offers £45,000 to £55,000 per annum plus flexible and hybrid working arrangements, within an established practice holding a healthy pipeline of work.
What Makes This Opportunity Stand Out
- Ownership of a varied portfolio rather than a narrow package of work.
- Direct involvement throughout the project lifecycle, from first appraisal to completion on site.
- A genuine balance of technical design, project leadership and client contact.
- Scope to influence standards, improve delivery and help develop the wider engineering team.
- A role where sound judgement, commercial awareness and practical problem-solving are valued.
What You'll Be Doing
- Taking responsibility for structural schemes from concept design through detailed delivery and construction support.
- Producing and reviewing calculations, reports, specifications, drawings and tender information.
- Coordinating engineers and technicians, setting priorities and keeping outputs on programme.
- Working closely with architects, contractors, clients and fellow consultants to resolve design issues efficiently.
- Preparing scopes, fee proposals, resource plans and delivery programmes.
- Monitoring budgets and identifying variations or additional services at the appropriate stage.
- Visiting sites, attending project meetings and responding to technical queries with confidence.
- Checking work before issue and maintaining clear, accurate project records.
- Coaching less experienced team members and contributing to a positive technical culture.
What You'll Bring
- A strong track record in structural engineering design and project delivery within a consultancy setting.
- Chartered or Incorporated status, or clear progress towards professional registration with a recognised engineering institution.
- Good working knowledge of Eurocodes, UK design standards, Building Regulations and relevant health and safety duties.
- Experience with structural analysis tools and drawing software such as AutoCAD or equivalent packages.
- The ability to lead project teams, coordinate competing demands and maintain quality under deadline pressure.
- Commercial understanding across fees, scope, resources and programme management.
- Clear communication and the confidence to build credible relationships with clients and project partners.
- A careful, organised approach with high standards of technical checking and documentation.
The Person
You are likely to be an experienced structural engineer who still enjoys the technical detail but is equally comfortable directing a team, challenging a design and speaking with clients. You will be pragmatic, accountable and able to see the wider commercial picture without compromising engineering quality.
