Job Type: Full-Time, Permanent.

Salary: Competitive package dependent on experience, including Pension

Location: Leeds LS13

The company specialises in high performance, extreme environment piezoelectric devices, systems and materials, offering a range of sensors, actuators and transducer devices based on its novel piezoelectric materials, with applications in areas such as non-destructive testing/evaluation (NDT/E), condition monitoring and flow measurement in demanding environments.

They are looking for an innovative Design & Development Engineer who will be a key contributor to the Product Development team, responsible for creating and implementing new ultrasonic sensor solutions for extreme environments (high temperature, radiation, pressure etc.). The company spans materials science, mechanical and electrical engineering, physics and acoustics, and programming. As such, you will work closely with colleagues of various disciplines to provide cutting edge solutions from pre-prototype stage through to full production.

The role will be varied, mixing conventional CAD design, process R&D, prototyping, testing, materials science, and manufacturing engineering. Because of this, there is scope for a candidate who does not fit the traditional mechanical design engineer mould to contribute, and so applications from those who have other applicable skills to offer will be considered.

You will serve as technical lead and project manager for projects of various complexities and lengths, as well as contribute collaboratively to the projects of others when required. As such, you should have an ability to work to deadlines, with a flexible approach to the varied tasks required of the role. Applicants must have the right to live and work in the UK.

Responsibilities

  • Design, prototype, assemble, and test sensors, by a range of acoustic, electrical, and mechanical means.
  • Manage and contribute to projects to develop Ionix sensors & system products, including liaising with suppliers and stakeholders to ensure product or project requirements are met.
  • Design and produce technical drawings of mechanical components and assemblies of devices using SolidWorks.
  • Create thorough and accurate documentation where required for project management, experimental plans and records, quality, and intellectual property purposes.
  • Present progress and feedback from development activities to technical and commercial colleagues.
  • Provide technical advice and support the business development process, working with sales and technical colleagues to achieve the collective commercial goals of the business.

The Candidate

A degree in Science or Engineering plus a minimum of 2 years industrial experience, or at least 4 years’ experience in research, product development, or mechanical design is strongly preferred. Demonstrable understanding and knowledge of CAD, preferably Solidworks, alongside knowledge of conventional manufacturing methods and techniques. A hands-on and analytical approach to development, capable of creating high quality documentation and reports and plans. Comfortable working cross functionally and developing into a subject matter expert. Confident producing and presenting technical specifications and presenting in formal design reviews and update meetings.

Desirable Skills And Attributes (but Not Essential)

  • Experience with equipment design for deep subsea, extreme pressures, or extreme temperatures.
  • Experience in processing of epoxy and polyurethane resins and composite materials.
  • Experience in non-destructive testing (NDT/NDE), particularly ultrasonic testing would be beneficial.
  • Experience in the design, modelling and construction of ultrasonic, piezoelectric or harsh environment sensors.
  • Experience in design of components for use in explosive environments (ATEX).
  • Experience of FEA analysis or simulation tools, particularly ultrasonics, ie., OnScale, COMSOL etc.
  • Experience with prototype manufacturing, including 3D printing, manual drilling & milling, and soldering.
  • Experience of electronics, embedded software and/or digital signal processing.
