At Wise, our powerful spending infrastructure has allowed customers to spend their funds anywhere in the world with ease. Now, for the first time we will be allowing our customers to spend on a fair and transparent credit card. We are building an international credit program for our personal and business customers. We need an Engineering Manager who can join us to build out the first credit offering from Wise and ensure we can build a transparent, reliable and trustworthy system that complies with local regulations around the world and serves our global market.

As the engineering lead, you will work with product, and begin to build our roadmaps, hire teams and develop this greenfields initiative. You will mentor engineers, and help define the product and team's missions to build out high performance teams, and an exceptional product.

What will you be working on?

Spend is looking for an Engineering Manager to help them ship their first credit cards. You’ll be joining a new team that is expanding the way Personal and Business customers can spend from their Wise Account. For the first time ever, we will be allowing businesses and personal customers to spend on credit offered by Wise. You’ll manage the core credit team within the squad who will be responsible for driving this initiative.

What will you be doing?

  • You will be a key driver of the teams technical roadmap and the broader product roadmap.
  • You’ll partner with our dedicated product manager, and the other teams across Spend and Account to help enable the issuing of credit cards internationally.
  • You will be responsible for building the systems which allow credit decisioning, tracking borrowed credit, accruing interest, repayment flows and much more.
  • You’ll also be responsible for ensuring that other teams will also support your vision and gaining alignment.
  • You will hire, lead, coach and mentor a talented group of engineers who can bring our vision to market.
  • You will help them grow, remove blockers and allow them to execute at a velocity which balances time to market with the quality our customers have come to expect.
  • You will have clear planning, release milestones and realistic commitments set.
  • You’re a strong owner of your product space, and you encourage collaboration and continuous improvement within your team and neighbouring teams around you.

Technical Responsibilities

  • Owning a technical roadmap to ensure that our product is maintained to high standards.
  • Lead the development of new solutions.
  • Drive initiatives from the ground up to develop entirely new products for our customers.
  • Serve as a technical expert for the broader credit domain.
  • Build with the future in mind, what we build today can be a platform for other products tomorrow.
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership, guiding the team on architectural design, code reviews, and best practices.
  • Ensuring code quality, consistency, and maintainability through code reviews and best practices.

Leadership Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor a diverse team of engineers (junior and senior), fostering a supportive environment that promotes technical growth.
  • Participate and drive product roadmapping and strategy sessions with the product management team.
  • Work closely with other Engineering Managers, Staff Engineers, and Product to shape the team’s and squad’s technical roadmaps.
  • Help the team navigate complex priorities and make trade-offs to deliver solutions that reduce risk and unlock growth.
  • Act as a key representative of the team, collaborating with stakeholders across the company and leading projects from the beginning till the release.
  • In particular, work closely with the Business squad, Spend squad and Account Squad to help define the Wise Business spending experience for our customers.

What we're looking for

Technical Excellence

  • You have a strong background in software engineering, with experience designing and building complex, scalable systems.
  • You have demonstrated 0 to 1 experience in your career.
  • You are an expert in delivering reliable and robust services in a production environment.
  • You are comfortable working on a complex domain and guiding a team through technical challenges.
  • You have experience working with distributed systems, and are as comfortable discussing technical tradeoffs as you are team direction.
  • Ideally some hands-on experience with front end development, though not essential.

Product Mindset

  • You have a strong sense of ownership and the ability to think beyond technical implementation to understand how your work impacts the business and our customers.
  • You are comfortable working in an autonomous environment, and can conceptualise and drive initiatives forward to completion.
  • Experience working closely with product and stakeholders to define requirements and prioritise the most impactful work.

Leadership Skills

  • You are an empathetic leader with a track record of mentoring and coaching engineers at all levels.
  • You can lead by example, inspiring your team to produce high-quality, maintainable code.
  • You are an excellent communicator, capable of articulating technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Ideal Background

  • Experience leading a team in a payments, fintech, or other complex, high-stakes domain.
  • Prior experience working on a team with a global, distributed setup.
  • Experience building systems that serve enterprise clients at scale.
  • Previous experience scaling teams and systems for global reach.
  • A strong foundation in distributed systems, and cloud architecture.
