BCL Legal is delighted to be assisting a prominent national law firm in the recruitment of a Senior Associate or Legal Director to join their growing Energy team in Birmingham. This is an exceptional opportunity for an experienced commercial lawyer with a passion for the energy sector to step into a high-impact role with exposure to market-leading work across renewables, low-carbon technologies, and major infrastructure projects.

The Role

As a Senior Associate or Legal Director in the Energy team, you'll advise on a wide range of complex and high-profile transactions across the clean and low-carbon energy spectrum. You'll work on a hybrid basis, collaborating with clients, project teams, and colleagues nationwide to deliver sophisticated legal and commercial solutions in a fast-evolving sector.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Advising on the full lifecycle of energy projects, from planning and procurement to operation and compliance.
  • Drafting and negotiating key project documentation, including power purchase agreements, grid connection contracts, and route-to-market arrangements.
  • Supporting energy generation and storage projects in renewables, hydrogen, nuclear, solar, and net zero sectors.
  • Advising on regulatory compliance and risk management within the UK energy framework.
  • Representing clients in complex commercial negotiations.
  • Staying up to date with evolving legislation and advising clients on strategic implications.
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams across the business to provide end-to-end legal support.
  • Working flexibly, typically 2-3 days per week in the Birmingham office.

About You

To be considered for this opportunity, you will:

  • Be a qualified solicitor with ideally 5-10 years' PQE in energy, infrastructure, or broader commercial projects work.
  • Have demonstrable experience in advising on energy transactions and regulatory matters.
  • Be confident drafting and negotiating complex commercial contracts.
  • Possess strong commercial awareness and the ability to provide clear, solutions-focused advice.
  • Be proactive, collaborative, and keen to contribute to business and practice development.
  • Bring a genuine interest in sustainability, low-carbon innovation, and shaping the future of energy law.
