THE ROLE: As the Health, Safety and Environmental Site Lead you will be part of the site Leadership Team and will therefore be a key influencer to ensure that the site is achieving legislative compliance, zero losses and developing a safety culture through engagement and capability building of colleagues.

KEY DUTIES

  • Lead the site's Health, Safety, Environmental and Wellbeing strategy, ensuring compliance with all applicable legislation and company standards.
  • Act as the principal advisor to managers and employees on health, safety and environmental matters, providing practical guidance and promoting best practice.
  • Develop, implement and continually improve HSE policies, procedures and management systems.
  • Lead initiatives that strengthen safety culture, employee engagement and positive behavioural change across the site.
  • Coach, mentor and support managers to develop their HSE leadership capability and accountability.
  • Design, deliver and coordinate HSE training programmes to ensure employees remain competent and compliant, whilst maintaining the training matrix.
  • Develop, monitor and report key HSE performance indicators, providing regular analysis and recommendations to the Site Leadership Team and Group.
  • Plan and deliver the annual HSE improvement programme, including management of the departmental budget and capital expenditure.
  • Lead investigations into incidents, accidents and significant near misses, ensuring root causes are identified and effective corrective actions implemented.
  • Conduct and oversee audits, inspections and risk assessments to verify compliance and identify opportunities for continual improvement.
  • Maintain accurate HSE records and produce reports to demonstrate compliance, performance and business improvements.
  • Monitor changes in legislation, industry guidance and emerging best practice, ensuring the organisation remains compliant and proactive.
  • Lead the maintenance of PEFC Chain of Custody certification and support the continued development of integrated management systems.
  • Lead the implementation and continual improvement of ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 management systems, working towards certification where required.
  • Build effective relationships with employees, managers, contractors, regulators and external stakeholders to support business objectives.
  • Undertake any other duties commensurate with the level and responsibilities of the role.
  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
  • HSE leadership experience within manufacturing, engineering or industrial environments.
  • Managing audits, risk assessments, incident investigations and compliance.
  • Driving safety culture improvements and working with unions and stakeholders.
  • Implementing ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 management systems.
  • Strong leadership, coaching and influencing skills.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management.
  • Audit, investigation and risk management capability.
  • Ability to analyse HSE performance data and drive improvements.
  • In-depth knowledge of UK Health, Safety and Environmental legislation.
  • Understanding of ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and auditing standards.
  • Knowledge of incident investigation, root cause analysis and change management.
  • NEBOSH Diploma
  • IEMA or NEBOSH Environmental Certificate
  • Internal Auditor qualification (ISO 9001/14001/45001)
  • Management qualification such as CMI Level 3+ (desirable).
