The Opportunity

An excellent opportunity for an experienced engineering leader to take ownership of a Design Engineering function, leading a team of engineers while driving technical excellence, continuous improvement, and effective project delivery.

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing team capability, overseeing engineering resources, maintaining design standards, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality engineering solutions that meet business, customer, and project requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, manage and develop the Design Engineering team through coaching, mentoring and performance management.
  • Plan and allocate engineering resources across product development, customer projects and business improvement activities.
  • Provide technical leadership and oversight of design activities, ensuring solutions are robust, manufacturable and fit for purpose.
  • Establish and maintain engineering standards, design governance processes and documentation practices.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding and the development of graduates and junior engineers.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance engineering efficiency, quality and repeatability.
  • Promote effective knowledge sharing, documentation and best practice across the engineering function.
  • Support the adoption of digital engineering tools and modern ways of working.
  • Work closely with Electronics, Embedded, Software, Manufacturing, Quality and Product teams to ensure successful project delivery.
  • Contribute to engineering strategy, product improvement initiatives and long-term capability development.

About You

We're looking for a confident engineering leader with strong people management skills and a proven background in design and product development within a technical engineering environment.

You will ideally have

  • Degree qualified in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Systems, Product Design or similar), or equivalent industry experience.
  • Significant experience within design engineering, product development, industrial equipment, automated test systems, special purpose machinery, manufacturing, or a similar high-technology sector.
  • Previous experience leading or managing engineers within a multidisciplinary engineering environment.
  • Strong understanding of engineering design processes, design reviews, technical risk management and engineering governance.
  • Experience producing and reviewing engineering documentation to support manufacture, testing and lifecycle support.
  • Knowledge of design for manufacture, design for test, maintainability and configuration control principles.
  • Strong resource planning, workload management and prioritisation skills.
  • A proven track record of coaching, mentoring and developing engineering teams.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage stakeholders across engineering, production, commercial and operational functions.
