Are you an experienced engineer with a passion for delivering innovative water and wastewater solutions?

We are looking for a talented Senior Engineer to join our utilities organisation in West Sussex.

This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in the design and delivery of critical water and wastewater projects, supporting the development of sustainable infrastructure that serves communities across the region.

Working alongside Principal Engineers and Project Design Managers, you will provide technical leadership, oversee project delivery, and guide junior engineers while contributing to a diverse portfolio of projects.

The Role

As a Senior Engineer, you will be responsible for the technical management and delivery of engineering designs, ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, and in line with programme and budget requirements.

You will work within multidisciplinary teams, providing technical expertise throughout the project lifecycle while supporting innovation, continuous improvement, and the development of engineering talent.

Key Responsibilities

  • Technical Delivery
  • Support the Principal Engineer and Project Design Manager in delivering water and wastewater projects.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to project teams.
  • Prepare, review, and approve reports, calculations, drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
  • Resolve complex engineering and design challenges.
  • Manage and coordinate the work of Assistant Engineers, Graduate Engineers, and Technicians.
  • Produce design plans and estimates to support project delivery.
  • Carry out quality assurance checks across project deliverables.
  • Health, Safety & Environment
  • Ensure designs comply with current industry standards, regulations, and business requirements.
  • Fulfil CDM Designer responsibilities where applicable.
  • Develop and maintain project risk assessments and health and safety strategies.
  • Promote safe, sustainable, and environmentally responsible engineering solutions.
  • Stakeholder Management
  • Build effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Communicate technical information clearly and effectively.
  • Support project teams in achieving successful project outcomes.
  • Innovation & Continuous Improvement
  • Challenge existing ways of working and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Promote innovative engineering solutions and digital design methodologies.
  • Research industry best practice and contribute to technical excellence across the business.
  • Team Development
  • Mentor and support junior engineers and technicians.
  • Assist with resource planning and team coordination.
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive team culture.
  • Commercial & Programme Management
  • Support the delivery of cost-effective engineering solutions.
  • Contribute to financial assessments and business cases.
  • Monitor project performance against programme and budget.
  • Ensure projects are delivered on time and to the required quality standards.

About You

We're looking for a motivated and technically capable engineer with experience in the UK water sector or a similar regulated infrastructure environment.

You will have

  • Proven experience delivering water and/or wastewater projects.
  • Strong technical knowledge within your engineering discipline.
  • Experience producing and reviewing engineering designs and technical documentation.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management abilities.
  • Experience supporting and mentoring junior team members.
  • The ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently.
  • A proactive approach to continuous improvement and innovation.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.

Essential Qualifications

  • MEng, BEng, BSc, or HNC in Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related discipline.
  • Membership of a relevant professional institution or significant progress towards professional chartership.
  • Experience working within water, wastewater, utilities, infrastructure, or a comparable engineering environment.

Desirable

  • Specialist expertise in a water or wastewater design discipline.
  • Knowledge of design delivery within regulated industries.
  • Experience using industry-standard engineering design software.
