A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a Principal Commercial Officer to join a commercial team, managing Domestic Commercial contracts through the full contract life cycle – from bidding and negotiation through to execution and closure.

This role performs the duties of business winning, negotiation, and contract management, and reports to senior commercial staff, supporting major new business campaigns and delivering Defence Capability to the UK Armed Forces and other customers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Playing a key role in winning new contracts and agreements of medium to high complexity, supporting the full Route to Contract and protecting the business's commercial interests
  • Working within a multi-functional bidding team to generate proposals, including reviewing and drafting contract terms
  • Supporting senior commercial staff on major new business campaigns
  • Gaining acceptance and agreement on issues and amendments to ensure contractual compliance within agreed boundaries
  • Acting as a vital part of the delivery chain, ensuring contractual promises to customers are met, including change management, problem solving and administration
  • Identifying commercial risks and opportunities associated with bids and contracts, and working with other departments to develop mitigation strategies
  • Building and maintaining relationships with new and existing customers and industry partners, with a focus on collaboration
  • Acting as the interface with internal project teams, providing commercial advice
  • Communicating with stakeholders at all levels, including reporting to senior management on the progress of your portfolio of work
  • Representing the commercial team in progress reviews and/or customer meetings

The ideal candidate would have

  • Awareness and practical applicability of Intellectual Property and its protection
  • Awareness of Import and Export restrictions and licencing requirements
  • Ability to understand and use pricing and costing models
  • Good knowledge of IT and business tools, including SAP

The ideal candidate must have

  • Advanced negotiation and interpersonal skills
  • Strong process and change management experience
  • Experience managing more complex, high value contracts
  • Effective team behaviours, with strong influencing and team working skills
  • Broad experience across commercial issues, including bidding and contract management throughout the full contract lifecycle
  • Solid commercial understanding, from customer through to supplier
  • Good understanding of contract law and its applicability
  • Ability to draft or modify terms and conditions
  • Understanding of liabilities and risk mitigation
