Lead Design Engineer
Are you an experienced Lead Design Engineer looking for a role offering technical ownership, customer interaction and the opportunity to lead engineering projects from concept through to manufacture?
We are working with an established engineering business specialising in bespoke mechanical design, fabricated equipment, process systems and structural solutions for a range of industrial sectors.
This is a varied Lead Design Engineer position where you will take projects from initial customer enquiry through design, manufacture and installation, working closely with customers, suppliers and manufacturing teams.
The Role
As Lead Design Engineer, you will
- Develop mechanical designs and engineering solutions from customer requirements.
- Produce 2D and 3D CAD designs, layouts, general arrangements and manufacturing drawings.
- Design bespoke fabricated equipment, structures and mechanical systems.
- Produce BOMs, technical specifications and manufacturing documentation.
- Ensure designs meet relevant standards, specifications and regulations.
- Work closely with manufacturing and fabrication teams to ensure designs are practical and cost-effective.
- Attend customer meetings and site visits where required.
- Support technical reviews, installation and project delivery.
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior engineers.
- Contribute to improving engineering standards, processes and design practices.
About You
We are looking for a technically strong Lead Design Engineer with experience in mechanical design and a good understanding of manufacturing and fabrication.
You should have
- HNC, HND or Degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar.
- Significant mechanical design experience within a manufacturing or engineering environment.
- Strong Auto CAD skills.
- Experience with fabricated equipment, steelwork, structures, process equipment or bespoke machinery.
- Strong understanding of manufacturing and fabrication processes.
- Experience producing detailed manufacturing and fabrication drawings.
- Knowledge of relevant engineering standards
- Ability to interpret customer requirements and develop practical engineering solutions.
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
- Experience mentoring or technically supporting other engineers.
Desirable: Solid Works, Inventor or other 3D CAD experience, pressure equipment, process engineering, P&IDs, CE/UKCA and experience within food, pharmaceutical, chemical, energy or other industrial sectors.
