Finance Director Designate

On an exclusive basis, greenwellgleeson are recruiting for a Financial Controller to grow to Finance Director for a growing, privately owned business in Northampton.

Initially joining as the company's senior finance lead in a hands-on Financial Controller capacity, you will be responsible for strengthening the finance function, improving processes and controls, and bringing the management accounts process fully in-house.

Working closely with the owners and senior leadership team, you will oversee the day-to-day finance operation while developing a high-performing finance team.

With an ambitious growth strategy and several acquisitions planned over the coming years, this role offers a clear pathway to Finance Director.

As the business evolves, you will play a key role in acquisition accounting, business integration, strategic decision making and commercial finance, ultimately becoming a trusted advisor to the board.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the day-to-day finance function, managing and developing a small finance team.
  • Improve financial processes, controls and reporting to support a growing business.
  • Bring the monthly management accounts process fully in-house, ensuring accurate and timely reporting.
  • Produce monthly management accounts, financial analysis and board reporting.
  • Oversee cash flow, working capital and balance sheet management.
  • Manage month-end and year-end close, ensuring robust financial controls.
  • Drive continuous improvement across finance systems, procedures and reporting.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting and financial planning processes.
  • Play a key role in acquisition activity, including financial due diligence, acquisition accounting and the integration of newly acquired businesses.
  • Partner with operational stakeholders to provide meaningful commercial insight and support decision making.
  • Build scalable finance processes capable of supporting continued growth.
  • Gradually assume greater strategic responsibility, progressing into the Finance Director role as the business expands.

Skills, Requirements, Qualifications

  • Fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA or CIMA).
  • Previous experience in a rapidly growing SME or privately owned business.
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge with experience producing high-quality management accounts.
  • Experience improving finance processes, controls and reporting.
  • Hands-on approach with the ability to operate strategically whilst remaining involved in day-to-day finance.
  • Previous experience managing a finance team.
  • Commercially aware with excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Experience supporting business acquisitions, integrations or corporate transactions would be highly advantageous.
  • Ambitious, proactive and excited by the opportunity to help shape a growing business.
