Are you an experienced Mechanical Engineer looking for the opportunity to influence the design and delivery of a major healthcare infrastructure programme?

We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to support the development of a hospital, ensuring that mechanical building services and engineering infrastructure are designed with operational efficiency, compliance, maintainability, and sustainability at the forefront.

The Role

As the Mechanical Engineer, you will act as the key mechanical engineering representative for Estates & Facilities.

You will provide expert operational and maintenance input throughout the design process, ensuring future engineering systems are practical, resilient, and fit for purpose.

Key responsibilities include

  • Reviewing mechanical designs, specifications, technical submissions, and consultant proposals.
  • Assessing designs from an operational, maintenance, compliance, and lifecycle perspective.
  • Coordinating and responding to technical Requests for Information (RFIs).
  • Identifying operational risks and opportunities throughout design development.
  • Ensuring maintainability, accessibility, resilience, and efficiency are incorporated into future facilities.
  • Supporting operational readiness, commissioning, and transition planning activities.
  • Facilitating engagement sessions between design teams and operational stakeholders.
  • Producing technical reports, option appraisals, and design review documentation.
  • Supporting long-term asset management, sustainability, and lifecycle planning.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have

  • A recognised qualification in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering.
  • Degree-level qualification (or equivalent experience).
  • Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng) status, or be working towards professional registration.
  • Significant experience within healthcare estates, facilities management, or complex engineering environments
  • Experience reviewing engineering designs and technical specifications.
  • Knowledge of mechanical building services including HVAC, water systems, medical gases, drainage, and associated infrastructure.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
  • The ability to assess technical proposals and translate them into operational requirements.

Desirable Experience

  • Previous NHS or healthcare estates experience.
  • Knowledge of relevant Healthcare Technical Memoranda (HTMs).
  • Experience supporting major capital projects or healthcare developments.
  • Experience of operational readiness, commissioning, or hospital transition programmes.
  • Knowledge of BIM, digital estates, and information management systems.
