We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Bridge Design and Build Engineer to lead complex technical projects and initiatives within our Highways Service.

This role is ideal for a professional with a strong background in highway structures engineering, looking to apply their expertise in a dynamic urban environment.

Day-to-day of the role

  • Lead the planning, coordination, and execution of maintenance programmes, focusing on annual bridge inspections to ensure structures are safe, compliant, and operationally efficient.
  • Oversee minor design reviews and proposals for highways and development schemes from feasibility through to commissioning.
  • Manage stakeholder coordination for routine and reactive works, and broader asset management.
  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders, managing enquiries and service communications.
  • Administer contracts and oversee external contractors and supply chain partners to ensure quality, value for money, innovation, and sustainable outcomes.
  • Manage risk, programme timelines, budgets, and technical compliance, contributing to wider highways and transport objectives.
  • Conduct desktop and site-based inspections focused on health and safety, quality, and safe working practices.
  • Undertake quality assurance through sample audits of completed works.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering, MSc in a relevant discipline, or HND in Highway Structures Engineering.
  • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer with relevant institution membership.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in bridge maintenance and construction within local authorities, consultancies, and contracting environments.
  • Strong technical background in structural inspections, assessments, and design.
  • Proficient in managing annual maintenance programmes in line with DMRB, CDM Regulations, and technical approval standards.
  • Experienced in leading general and principal inspections, maintaining accurate asset records, and producing high-quality technical documentation.
  • Skilled in procurement and delivery of works, providing technical assurance, supervision, and contract support throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills and ability to manage communications effectively.
