Operations & Commercial Director

Salary: £75,000 - £85,000 DOE

About the Role

We are seeking an ambitious and commercially focused Operations & Commercial Director to join our senior leadership team.

Reporting directly to the Managing Director, you will lead and develop a team responsible for HR, Finance, Purchasing, SHEQ and Logistics while helping shape and deliver the company's growth strategy.

This is a key leadership role for an individual with proven operational management experience, strong commercial awareness and a track record of delivering business improvements.

You will be responsible for driving profitability, improving operational efficiency, enhancing systems integration and supporting the continued growth of the business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership
  • Produce and present monthly operational and commercial reports.
  • Drive profitability through margin improvement and cost control.
  • Manage pricing strategies and annual price increases.
  • Develop and monitor KPIs across all operational functions.
  • Support accurate forecasting and business performance reporting.
  • Lead initiatives that improve business systems, data reporting and operational efficiency.
  • Team Leadership
  • Lead, mentor and develop a team covering HR, Finance, SHEQ, Purchasing and Logistics.
  • Conduct annual appraisals, performance reviews and regular one-to-one meetings.
  • Establish clear objectives, development plans and accountability measures.
  • Ensure effective training and development programmes are implemented.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement and collaboration.
  • Operational Management
  • Oversee Finance activities including forecasting, analysis and reporting.
  • Manage HR processes including recruitment, policies, performance management and employee development.
  • Ensure effective SHEQ compliance, systems and quality standards.
  • Monitor purchasing performance, supplier relationships, stock management and margin performance.
  • Oversee logistics operations including stock accuracy, warehouse efficiency and delivery costs.
  • Commercial & Systems Development
  • Utilise Hub Spot and Sage 200 to analyse business performance and drive efficiencies.
  • Implement data-driven initiatives to improve decision making and forecasting.
  • Work closely with other departments to identify opportunities for growth and process improvement.
  • Review product profitability and recommend commercial improvements.
  • Supplier & E-Commerce Management
  • Develop strong supplier relationships and oversee commercial negotiations.
  • Monitor supplier pricing and product margins to maximise profitability.
  • Support the growth and performance of the company's e-commerce offering.
  • Increase product availability online and improve operational efficiency across digital sales channels.

Essential Experience

  • Proven experience in a senior operational leadership position.
  • Experience managing multi-functional operational teams.
  • Background within an engineering, manufacturing or technical environment.
  • Strong commercial acumen with experience improving margins and profitability.
  • Demonstrable success implementing operational improvements and business efficiencies.
  • Experience creating, tracking and reporting KPIs.
