Provides assistance and support to surgeons by preparing and providing instruments and equipment during surgical procedures in the Operating Room. Works under the supervision of the surgeon. Facilitates a safe, effective and orderly operating room to maximize patient safety. Follows approved infection control, quality assurance, and department policies and procedures related to the cleaning, decontamination, disinfection, and sterilization of surgical instruments, trays, packs, and reusable medical devices for all hospital departments and PMG clinics.
Qualifications
- Education: High School Diploma or GED required.
- Scrub various types of basic surgical procedures: general, OB/gyn, urology, gastroenterology.
- Current BLS required.
- Short-term training in operating room setting preferred.
- Previous experience with handling of sterile supplies and/or instruments preferred.
- Familiarity with all surgical instruments and equipment.
- Working knowledge of sterile and aseptic technique.
Responsibilities
- Demonstrates ability to problem-solve in relation to the procedure being performed.
- Maintain current knowledge of various equipment, procedures and supplies.
- Adheres to proper surgical procedures of aseptic technique and safety in the use of instruments and equipment.
- Performs instrument counts prior to each procedure and maintains an accurate count of sponges, needles, and instruments during the procedure.
- Secures and prepares all supplies, instruments, and equipment required for surgical intervention before procedures.
- Ensures the preparation and maintenance of the sterile field in the OR.
- Prepares patient skin for surgical treatment.
- Positions and re-positions patient during surgery.
- Helps monitor patients during surgery.
- Provides supportive care during the pre-operative phase.
- Performs scrub functions.
- Ensures that specimens are correctly handled and routed to the proper source.
- Maintains current knowledge of anatomy/physiology and medications used intraoperatively.
- Keeps current with developments in the field through participation in seminars, workshops and publications.
- Follows all federal, state and departmental safety procedures.
- Identifies, inspects, and assembles all laser, endoscopic, general, and specialty instruments and equipment per specifications and manufacturer recommendations.
- Adheres to proper attire within restricted and semi-restricted areas.
- Adheres to donning and doffing of PPE requirements with proper hand hygiene practices.
- Adheres to workflow patterns, standard precautions, sterility assurance, biological and chemical indicator monitoring.
- Inspects, cleans, prepares, assembles, and sterilizes instruments and trays.
- Decontaminates, performs high level disinfection and stores GI flexible endoscopes.
- Processes instrumentation according to instructions for use.
- Selects and operates specialized cleaning equipment.
- Follows manufacturer guidelines for use of indicators for daily equipment performance testing of washers and sterilizers.
- Meets regulatory requirements for sterilization, high level disinfection, biological monitoring, and employee competencies.
- According to manufacturer guidelines, selects and prepares packing materials for the sterilization of reusable instrumentation.
- Selects appropriate method of sterilization.
- Properly loads and unloads sterilization cart items.
- Verifies that sterilization parameters have been met before distribution.
- Validates and maintains event-related protocols; disinfection and/or sterilization load parameters and records.
- Accurately documents and maintains daily records of all QA and sterilization functions according to regulatory agency and Infection Control standards.
- Inventories, restocks, and distributes instruments and medical equipment for the Perioperative department, other hospital departments and PMG Clinics.
- Performs other functions as required.
