An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full-time qualified Occupational Therapist to develop their clinical skills under the Occupational Therapy Career Framework working in Adult Mental Health at Bryngofal ward, based at Prince Phillip Hospital in Llanelli.

The Adult Mental Health Service (AMH) is looking for an enthusiastic Occupational Therapist with a specific interest in AMH and a passion for working with people with functional mental health issues. This post is a fantastic opportunity to develop the Occupational Therapy role in an inpatient environment and contribute to service developments. The key aims of the service include proactive care, providing an inclusive and multi-disciplinary pathway enabling people to improve function and return to their home of choice.

Main duties of the job:

The successful applicant will be responsible for autonomously holding an Occupational Therapy caseload for clients with functional mental health issues on Bryngofal ward, which includes those with complex presentations. This will involve selecting and undertaking evidence-based assessments, developing holistic and person-centred goals and care plans, delivering interventions, evaluating outcomes, and adapting the plan of care based on outcomes.

The post holder will be keen to develop best practice in compliance with A Healthier Wales and will maintain close links with Community Mental Health Teams in AMH as well as other services to support patients on discharge. The post holder will be required to develop positive relationships between all healthcare professionals, statutory and voluntary agencies, maintaining good communication across all areas. You will have the benefit of working with and providing supervision for OT Technicians and will be expected to act as clinical supervisor to undergraduate students.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

The successful applicant will be proactive in developing their clinical skills and competencies within this specialist field. Occupational Therapists within Hywel Dda have access to regular supervision and annual PADRs. Continuing professional development opportunities include attending Clinical Practice meetings, Clinical Case Supervision, Peer Support opportunities, Occupational Therapy specific training and opportunities to engage in Post Graduate Qualifications.

Bryngofal unit is situated within the site of Prince Philip Hospital in Llanelli. As well as all the benefits the Trust offers, we are central to all local shopping centres, public transport is on site, and the M4 is within a mile. Llanelli is a market town and the largest community in Carmarthenshire located on the Loughor estuary only 10.5 miles from Swansea. Llanelli has scenic coastal paths, beautiful beaches, a choice of nature and wildlife areas, historic landmarks and a variety of bars and restaurants to enjoy on your days off.

Person Specification:
  • Essential: Degree/Diploma in Occupational Therapy, Current HCPC registration, Knowledge of relevant current health and social care legislation applicable to role, Knowledge and application of Microsoft Office software, Understanding of the roles of other staff groups in health and social care, Knowledge of a range of rehabilitation interventions across all therapies, Understanding and application of clinical governance, including research and audit methodology, Understanding and application of relevant outcome measures to demonstrate effectiveness.
  • Desirable: Knowledge of other services that link across primary/secondary/intermediate care, Working knowledge of therapeutic equipment, Knowledge of Health Board and priorities, Accredited Practice Educator, Accredited Agored Assessor.

Experience:

  • Essential: Significant post-graduate experience of working as an occupational therapist across a range of settings and variety of conditions, Managing a complex and varied caseload, Working independently with indirect or arms-length supervision, Delegation and supervision of staff, Experience of coping independently with distressing or emotional situations in challenging work environments, Working as part of a team, Experience of contributing to service development and implementing service changes, Direct involvement with carers and families, Self-development and application of learning, Use of adapted techniques for improving patient outcomes.
  • Desirable: Experience of working with groups, Experience of working in a community setting, Experience of using virtual communication platforms for delivering service, Experience in the same clinical area as post being applied for.

Language Skills:

  • Desirable: Welsh Speaker (Level 1)
