Job Description WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS BT relies on submarine cables to form the backbone of the international transmission network delivering services and products to BT\’s multinational corporate customers. 97% of BT\’s international traffic is carried over submarine cables. BT also relies on submarine cables to deliver domestic services within the UK including Fibre broadband meeting UK consumer and business customers expectations. This job ensures that the Subsea Cable Stations and subsea cables operated by BT meet the requirements of BT and external customers. ROLE DUTIES – To operate and maintain the diverse range of transmission plant & services located within the Cable Landing Station (CLS) ensuring that the high capacity, high revenue routes being carried are of the highest quality. – Gaining the relevant training and experience to lead in fault rectification activities at the CLS and ensure the prompt and efficient restoration of customer traffic as per BT procedures and guidelines. – Lead and act as the Terminal Power Safety Officer for Subsea systems. To make safe and issue permits to work as required. – Field engineering which may include but is not limited to maintaining and installing subsea cables at BT\’s cable landing sites and remote working in cable landing stations around the UK. – To attend, support and give advice to BT engineering teams in their roles at other UK and European cable landing stations in the maintenance of subsea cables systems. – Carrying out on call commitments including travelling to site out of hours – To ensure that all System, Manufacturer and Compliance routines and checks are completed as per System and BT guidelines. – To provide and lead specialised technical support to customers and distant ends as required. SKILLS YOU\’LL NEED Mandatory: – Driving licence. – Ability to travel. – Valid Passport. – Fibre Network Knowledge. – Computer competent. – Problem solver. – Working alone. – Team working. – Ability to communicate effectively at all levels. – Field Engineering. – Ability to work in water – Have a good level of fitness – Be competent at swimming must be able to swim 50m in an open water environment. SKILLS YOU\’LL NEED Preferred: – Power AC/DC knowledge or qualifications. – Electrical testing. – Experience in troubleshooting complex issues spanning multiple transmission systems. – Advanced level of specialist and technical skills in the SDH, WDM or OTN Transmission area. – Advanced level of knowledge in Optical Transmission systems like Wave Division Multiplexing and Dense Wave Division Multiplexing. – An advanced level of knowledge in Digital Transmissions systems and techniques – Fibre testing, splicing, jointing and optical fault location – Advanced IT Networking skills (Operating systems, IP routing, Networking, Server management, computer architecture and repair) BENEFITS – BT Pension scheme, minimum 5% Employee contribution, BT contribution 10% – From January 2025, equal family leave: receive 18 weeks at full pay, 8 weeks at half pay and 26 weeks at the statutory rate.
