The Role
As Head of GSI Specialty Lines Underwriting, you’ll be responsible for:
- Implementing GSI-specific underwriting strategies and applying guidelines through the GSI Underwriting teams.
- Responding to industry trends and their impacts on GSI portfolio results, coordinating consistent underwriting strategies in response to industry, regulatory, and claims events.
- Implementing global specialty underwriting strategies and guidelines where applicable.
- Providing thought leadership on specialty lines topics and leading the Specialty Lines Underwriting Roundtable.
- Supporting emerging risk analysis and cross-platform initiatives with specialty lines expertise.
- Evaluating training needs within GSI and contributing to group training initiatives.
- Ensuring measurable standards for underwriting excellence, including KPIs, quality assurance, risk controls, and market response.
- Coordinating established underwriting strategies across business units for consistency.
- Monitoring regional portfolios to identify profitability opportunities and reviewing lessons learned for performance improvement.
- Applying quantitative analytics and pricing methodologies for better decision-making.
- Ensuring understanding of Munich Re guidance across GSI and participating in relevant expert groups and boards.
- Occasional coordination with reinsurance colleagues and support for reinsurance underwriting strategies.
- Assessing specialty lines accumulations to inform strategy and portfolio management.
- Coordinating budget requests to maximize return opportunities.
What we are looking for
Successful candidates will possess:
- In-depth knowledge of insurance underwriting practices, data analysis, and decision-making skills.
- At least 10 years of specialty lines underwriting experience in primary business across two or more classes.
- Experience underwriting MGA/Program business.
- Experience in London and E&S markets, including commercial lines.
- Ability to communicate underwriting intent for new products clearly.
- Ability to explain complex insurance and reinsurance concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and influencing skills.
- Excellent presentation skills.
- Willingness to travel (up to 35-45%).
Key Skills & Experience
Bachelor’s degree, with an advanced degree considered a plus.
