The successful applicant should have a successful VMware-to-Proxmox migration or a very similar proven track record. They will require a blend of virtualisation expertise, Linux fluency, and practical migration experience.
Core Technical Skills
- Strong Virtualisation Background
- Deep understanding of VMware vSphere/ESXi environments, including VM configuration, storage, and networking.
- Familiarity with Proxmox VE architecture, including clustering, storage models, and native backup tools like Proxmox Backup Server.
- Linux Systems Administration
- Proxmox is Debian-based, so comfort with Linux CLI, shell scripting, and system services is essential.
- Ability to troubleshoot boot issues, kernel modules, and hardware compatibility.
- Migration Tooling & Disk Conversion
- Experience with converting VMDK to QCOW2 or RAW formats.
- Familiarity with tools like qemu-img, virt-v2v, or Proxmox's built-in import wizard.
- Equally able to build new Windows 2019 Servers rebuilding services and systems where needed.
- Networking & Firewall Configuration
- Understanding of virtual bridges, VLANs, and Proxmox's firewall model.
- Ability to replicate VMware's virtual networking setup in Proxmox.
- Backup & Recovery Planning
- Knowledge of backup strategies pre- and post-migration.
- Experience with tools like Nakivo (which supports both VMware and Proxmox) or Proxmox Backup Server.
