Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • To vacuum carpets, clean floors, paint work, work surfaces and toys; polish window shelves, furniture and woodwork; empty wastepaper bins into sacks and deal in accordance with the Council's safe working practices.
  • To spot mop, clean spillages and wash floors as necessary, depending on the use to which the area has been put and the nature of surfaces.
  • To clean toilets, including lavatory pans, hand basins and fixtures and fittings using cleaning fluids and disinfectant as appropriate and in accordance with safe working practice; to clean potties after use by the children; to replace toilet rolls as and when required.
  • To clean and scour sinks and keep other basic domestic equipment and machinery in a clean and workable condition, reporting any defects or faults to the Head Teacher.
  • To ensure sufficient cleaning materials are available by checking how much is left and informing the Head Teacher when the amount is low; when cleaning is finished, to put away materials and equipment, ensuring equipment is clean.
  • To report failed light bulbs and any health and safety hazards to the Head Teacher.
  • To operate Centre washing machines and dryers, loading the machines to wash or dry garments, towels, face cloths, dressing up clothes, sleeping bags as and when required.
  • To be responsible for the safety of the laundry area, ensuring all machinery is switched off and safe when not in use, mopping dry and spillage immediately and storing safely all cleaning materials when not in use, in accordance with the Council's safe working practices.
  • To assist the cook in loading/unloading of Centre dishwasher as and when required; when the dishwasher is not working, to assist in washing up.
  • To assist in the general care, activities and comforting of children.
  • To assist in setting out materials and equipment for children's activities and tidying up afterwards.
  • To accompany Teachers/Nursery Officers taking groups of children on visits and outings.
  • To change and rinse out soiled clothes and assist children in toileting.
  • To assist children at mealtimes following eating/mealtimes policies of the Centre.
