An exciting opportunity has arisen for surgical nurses to join our friendly and energetic team on Ellis Ward. Ellis Ward is a 14-bed adult female surgical ward, predominantly caring for patients undergoing treatment for breast and gynaecological cancers, along with colorectal, upper GI and urology cases. We also provide chemotherapy, radiotherapy and symptom control support.
We are looking for a committed, enthusiastic and self-motivated Band 5 nurse to join our well-established team. We will offer a supernumerary period designed to explore all that the ward has to offer, as well as time allocated with a mentor and members of the multidisciplinary team. We provide a tailor-made programme to introduce you to the ward, and training opportunities to develop your oncology knowledge and leadership skills.
Responsibilities- Plan, document, deliver and evaluate evidence-based nursing care for patients in a responsible and efficient way, in conjunction with the shift coordinator.
- Develop a greater awareness and understanding of the needs of patients with cancer and the different treatment modalities administered within the unit.
- Understand and manage shift responsibilities with guidance from the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse.
- Administer chemotherapy and intravenous drugs and support the oncology team.
- Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and case discussions.
- Contribute to quality assurance and patient care initiatives.
- Registered nursing (full registration required).
- Evidence of ongoing professional development.
- Qualification in oncology or a related speciality is desirable.
- Diploma or degree level study, or equivalent.
- Recognised teaching qualification.
- Post registration nursing experience in oncology or a related speciality.
- Experience in intravenous drug administration and chemotherapy administration.
- Experience in clinical management.
- Evidence of relevant teaching experience.
- Knowledge and understanding of clinical trials management.
- Effective interpersonal skills and ability to liaise with multidisciplinary team members.
- Ability to work well in a team.
- Self-motivation and decision-making skills.
- Organisation and prioritisation skills.
- Commitment to customer care initiatives.
- Knowledge of quality issues and NHS Plan.
- Computer literacy (e.g., Microsoft Word and Outlook).
- Flexibility to meet service needs, including shift work and working on both sites.
- Venepuncture and/or cannulation skills.
- Negotiating and influencing skills.
- Leadership and the ability to motivate others.
