We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Substance Misuse Nurse to join our Substance Misuse team at HMP Belmarsh. HMP Belmarsh is a male prison Category A with a capacity of 700 adults.

  • Hours: shifts 24 hours, between 7:30 am - 8 pm and 7:30 pm - 8 am; 3 weeks of days and 1 week of nights/weekends, 37.5 hours total.

Main Duties

  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, prioritising patient care to develop individualised packages of care through comprehensive assessment and recovery planning.
  • Deliver a range of treatment options including clinical and psychosocial interventions in both group and 1:1 settings, with recovery at the centre of our healthcare wellbeing model.
  • Carry out comprehensive assessments, initiate and review individual recovery plans and confidently communicate treatment options to service users.
  • Monitor therapeutic responses to medication and potential side effects and liaise with prescribers; provide advice and information on a 1:1 basis.
  • Have an understanding and commitment to recovery and a person-centred approach.
  • Attend emergency calls.
  • Assess new arrivals and refer them to the appropriate department.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Registered nurse with current NMC registration.
  • Evidence of continued professional development (CPD).
  • Experience of working with opiate dependent patients.
  • Sound clinical substance misuse knowledge.
  • A non-judgmental and compassionate approach.
  • Experience in a hospital, community or prison environment (ideal but not essential).

Additional Requirements

  • Legal right to work in the United Kingdom and subject to additional vetting and security checks.
  • Submission for Disclosure to the Disclosure and Barring Service (CRB) to check for any previous convictions.
  • Applicants must have current UK professional registration.
