Responsibilities
- Maintain security and order within the prison environment.
- Provide support and guidance to prisoners, including counselling and teaching roles.
- Work as part of a team to ensure safety for staff and visitors.
- Cover various shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays.
Requirements
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Meet the Civil Service nationality requirements.
- Pass a medical and fitness assessment, including an eyesight test, hearing test and basic health screening.
- Meet the required eyesight standard in both eyes, with and without corrective lenses.
- Have suitable hearing (without the use of hearing aids).
- Maintain an appropriate standard of hearing and not have offensive or intimidating visible tattoos; facial tattoos are generally not acceptable except for cultural, religious, or medical reasons.
- For high security (category A) prisons, have lived in the UK for the last 3 years.
- Be legally eligible to live and work in the UK and in the Civil Service.

Nationality Requirements
- Nationals of the Republic of Ireland.
- Nationals of Commonwealth countries who have the right to work in the UK.
- Nationals of EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein and their family members who have applied for settled or pre settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS).
- Individuals with limited leave to remain or indefinite leave to remain who were eligible for EUSS on or before 31 December 2020.
- Turkish nationals and certain family members of Turkish nationals who have accrued the right to work in the Civil Service.
Pay and Benefits
The initial training is 37 hours a week. After training you may work 37, 39 or 41 hours a week. Your annual salary will reflect your weekly hours.
- 37 hours a week: £33,746 per year.
- 39 hours a week: £35,875 per year.
- 41 hours a week: £38,003 per year.

Travel to Work
Some prison establishments are situated in rural locations with limited public transport options. A driving licence and own transport are beneficial but not essential unless specified. You are responsible for getting to and from your workplace on time for the start of your shift.
