Responsibilities

  • Protect the public and help make a positive impact on prisoners' lives.
  • Support the prison community, maintain safety and act as a peacekeeper when required.
  • Build constructive, professional relationships with prisoners and other staff.
  • Work as part of a dedicated team, showing commitment to colleagues and the safety of everyone.
  • Work a range of shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays.
  • Take on varied roles such as counsellor or teacher when needed.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • At least 18 years old at the start of employment.
  • Meet Civil Service nationality requirements.
  • Pass a medical and fitness assessment, including eyesight and hearing tests.
  • Meet required eyesight standards in both eyes (with or without corrective lenses).
  • Have suitable hearing (without hearing aids).
  • Have no offensive, discriminatory, violent or intimidating tattoos; facial tattoos are generally not accepted unless cultural, religious or medical.

Additional Requirements for High Security (Category A)

  • Resided in the UK for the last 3 years.

  • Annual salary reflects weekly hours: 37 hrs - £35,746; 39 hrs - £37,875; 41 hrs - £40,003.
  • 25 days' annual holiday, rising to 30 after 10 years.
