Cygnet Group is recruiting a Mental Health Law Practitioner to join our team at Cygnet Hospital Oldbury. The hospital offers secure mental health services for men and has two wards: a 12 bed Rational PICU and a 15 bed Acute Ward, supported by a full multidisciplinary team (MDT). The role is based in the West Midlands and involves 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 9 am-5 pm.
Job responsibilities:
- Ensure that all procedures relative to the Mental Health Act and associated legislation are adhered to.
- Ensure the legal detention of patients.
- Ensure adequate records for detained patients are maintained.
- Ensure adequate and safe storage of documentation.
- Receive section papers during working hours.
- Arrange correction of errors relating to detention of patients to meet all legal requirements.
- Ensure patients and their nearest relatives are aware of their individual rights and the power of detention, and assist as required with exercising these rights.
- Maintain an up-to-date list of mental health solicitors and arrange patient representation at hearings or appeals where appropriate.

Qualifications:
- Experienced Mental Health Act Administrator with a minimum of two years of experience.
- Good knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams).
- Education to GCSE level (or equivalent) with qualifications in English and Maths.
- Exceptional organisational skills.
- Experience working in a healthcare environment alongside medical practitioners.
- Knowledge of the Mental Health Act 1983/2007.
- Knowledge of compliance and auditing systems required by regulatory bodies (CQC).
- Experience in taking minutes during meetings.
Additional Requirements:
- Successful candidates will be required to undergo an enhanced DBS check.
