Are you passionate about ensuring public services operate safely, legally and effectively? We're looking for a proactive and detail orientated Health & Safety Officer to join our team on a part time basis and help uphold the highest standards of compliance across council operations.
About the Role
Reporting to the Health & Safety Manager, you'll play a key role in supporting the Town Clerk and senior leadership by overseeing regulatory initiatives, conducting inspections, and advising on legislative compliance. This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to the safety and integrity of council services while working in a dynamic and collaborative environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee all regulatory and compliance initiatives, including employee training and development providing advice and support to the Town Clerk.
- Ensure that the Council and its employees are complying with regulatory requirements and internal policies and procedures.
- Advise the Town Clerk and the Management team on any matters requiring action to ensure all compliance.
- Develop and manage training needs and action plans to ensure Council staff and members remain up to date on all legislative matters affecting their work.
- Provide administrative support to the Town Clerk, ensuring all contracts, risk assessments, audits, accounts records and data files are kept up to date and in a consistent format at all times.
- Regularly review all policies and procedures in place to ensure they conform to relevant legislation and provide regular feedback and reports to the Town Clerk on changes that are needed/recommended.
- Input into key reports developed by the Town Clerk and Senior Management team to ensure they are consistent, compliant and have been risk assessed as well as liaising with the Council's solicitors when needed.
What We're Looking For
- NVQ Level 3 or above in a relevant subject.
- Strong understanding of health & safety legislation, including Health & Safety at Work Act and the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and digital communication platforms.
- Experience in risk assessments and operational reporting.
- Awareness of Martyn's Law and public space safety principles.
- Experience working with or within a local government.
- Strategic thinking and a proactive approach to problem solving.
- Familiarity with case management systems and digital inspection tools.
