About the role
Prison officers protect the public and make an impact on prisoners' lives. In this fast‑paced environment you will act as a peacekeeper, counsellor or teacher, building constructive, positive and professional relationships with prisoners. Teamwork is vital; you will support colleagues and maintain a safe environment. The role involves working various shifts, including nights, weekends and public holidays.
Key responsibilities
- Maintain order and safety in the prison.
- Support prisoners in their personal development.
- Assist with the physical and emotional well‑being of inmates.
- Deliver training, educational or therapeutic programmes as required.
- Cooperate with fellow officers and other staff to implement security procedures.
Requirements
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Meet Civil Service nationality requirements.
- Pass a medical and fitness assessment.
- Meet eyesight and hearing standards.
- Must not have any offensive or violent tattoos; facial tattoos generally not acceptable except for cultural, religious or medical reasons.
- For a category A prison: have been a UK resident for the last 3 years.
- Holder of a valid UK driving licence is beneficial but not essential (unless specified).

- Nationals of the Republic of Ireland.
- Nationals of Commonwealth countries with the right to work in the UK.
- Nationals of the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein and certain family members.
- Individuals with limited or indefinite leave to remain who were eligible for EUSS before 31 December 2020.

Pay & Working Hours
The initial training is 37 hours a week. After training you may choose 37, 39 or 41 hours a week.
- 37 hours = £33,746 per year.
- 39 hours = £35,875 per year.
- 41 hours = £38,003 per year.
Prisons operate 24/7, and you will cover a range of shift patterns (evenings, nights, weekends, public holidays). Most prisons use a 39‑hour week pattern.
