The Senior EHS Leader will design, implement and oversee Environmental, Health & Safety strategy for a major heavy‑engineering manufacturing site undergoing extensive expansion. The role spans multiple sites – Rugby, Loughborough, Newcastle Upon Tyne and Nether Alderley – and requires driving proactive safety culture, risk management, and regulatory compliance across construction, commissioning and operations.

Responsibilities

  • Strategic EHS Leadership
    • Develop and deliver a long‑term EHS strategy that aligns with corporate objectives, UK/EU regulations and future growth.
    • Advise senior leadership on EHS matters related to large‑scale CAPEX projects, manufacturing risks and environmental impact.
    • Lead EHS input into the steam turbine factory extension programme, embedding risk controls in project design, contractor management and commissioning.
  • Construction & Expansion Support
    • Serve as the principal EHS authority for the extension project, ensuring full compliance with CDM regulations.
    • Conduct design‑stage EHS reviews and drive the implementation of safe systems of work, construction phase plans and environmental controls throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Site Security Leadership
    • Own the strategy and daily governance for site security during normal operations and the high‑risk construction period.
    • Implement security risk assessments, manage access control systems, perimeter protection, CCTV and intruder detection, and develop emergency preparedness plans for fire, breaches, evacuation, terrorism and business continuity.
  • Operational EHS Management
    • Establish robust risk assessment, PUWER compliance, safe operating procedures and machinery safeguarding.
    • Create and monitor EHS KPIs, driving continuous improvement in line with ISO45001 and ISO14001 standards.
  • Environmental Lead
    • Create and execute an environmental strategy covering emissions, waste management, water sustainability and compliance with EA permits.
    • Lead initiatives to improve energy efficiency, support net‑zero and decarbonisation goals, and maintain rigorous environmental risk assessments, monitoring and reporting.
  • Culture, Training & Stakeholder Engagement
    • Champion a safety ownership culture through leadership visibility, communication and coaching.
    • Lead EHS training and competency programmes, partner with HR and external regulators, and represent the site during audits, inspections and corporate forums.
  • Incident Management & Compliance Assurance
    • Conduct incident investigations using root‑cause methodologies, drive corrective actions and ensure statutory inspections, audits, risk assessments and H&S committee meetings are completed on schedule.
    • Maintain compliance with UK legislation including the Health and Safety at Work Act, COSHH, LOLER, PUWER, RIDDOR and CDM.

Qualifications

  • Chartered status with NEBOSH or degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Extensive EHS leadership experience in heavy manufacturing, engineering or industrial operations.
  • Proven ability to support large‑scale CAPEX construction or factory expansion projects.
  • Deep knowledge of UK EHS legislation (CDM, environmental permitting) and strong risk management skills.
  • Leadership presence with influence across all levels, strategic planning capability and operational control.
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder management, data‑driven mindset and continuous improvement orientation.
  • Resilience, decisiveness and the ability to coach, motivate and develop teams.

Desirable: experience in power generation, rotating machinery or turbine‐related manufacturing; lean manufacturing, Six Sigma or operational excellence tools; additional qualifications in fire safety, environmental management or occupational hygiene.

Additional Requirements

  • The role requires holding or ability to obtain SC Level security clearance as a UK passport holder. Dual passport holders are acceptable if the second country is approved by the vetting authority.
