We provide for the immediate needs of those in desperate circumstances with safety, food, warmth, clothing, laundry, showers and access to our state‑of‑the‑art IT suite and healthcare all onsite. Purpose of Job
The Kitchen Assistant is responsible for ensuring the cleanliness and sanitation of the kitchen, including all equipment, utensils, and work surfaces. They play a vital role in the smooth operation of the kitchen by assisting chefs with basic food preparation and maintaining a tidy and safe working environment.
Key Duties
- Dishwashing and Cleaning
- Washing and sanitising dishes, cutlery, pots, pans, and kitchen utensils by hand or using a commercial dishwasher.
- Ensuring all kitchen equipment (e.g., ovens, grills, fryers, food processors) is clean and properly maintained.
- Regularly cleaning and sanitising all kitchen work surfaces, including countertops and floors.
- Maintaining the cleanliness of the kitchen's floors, including sweeping, mopping and ensuring they are free of slip hazards.
- Waste Management
- Disposing of kitchen waste and recycling materials properly and in a timely manner.
- Ensuring waste bins are clean and have appropriate liners.
- Kitchen Organisation
- Assisting with the unpacking and storage of food deliveries.
- Organising and stacking clean dishes, pots, and utensils in designated locations.
- Maintaining the cleanliness and organisation of storage areas, including fridges, freezers and dry storage.
- Ensuring all stock is rotated and expired items are disposed of.
- Support to Kitchen Staff
- Assisting the chef with basic food preparation tasks, such as peeling vegetables or washing produce, as directed.
- Carrying out any other duties as required by the Chef or Centre Manager to support the kitchen's operation.
Requirements
- Physical fitness: The role is physically demanding and requires the ability to lift heavy items, stand for long periods and perform repetitive tasks.
- Work ethic: A strong, can do attitude and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Attention to detail: Meticulous attention to cleanliness and hygiene standards.
- Experience: Previous experience in a similar role is an advantage but not essential as training is often provided.
- Reliability and punctuality.
- Ability to follow instructions and work with minimal supervision.
- Good communication skills.
- Knowledge of basic health and safety practices in a kitchen environment.
