The 11-18 (Secondary) QTS Programme - Design & Technology at Bromley Schools' Collegiate prepares graduates to teach Design & Technology in secondary schools. The programme combines structured training with two contrasting school placements, enabling trainees to develop strong subject knowledge, practical teaching skills, and confidence in managing workshop- and classroom-based learning.

You will be supported to plan and deliver engaging lessons that develop pupils' creativity, problem-solving, technical skills, and understanding of design processes, materials, and manufacturing techniques.

Course Structure

The programme is delivered full time from September to July and includes two placements in contrasting secondary schools. The first placement runs from September to December, followed by a second placement from January to July. Throughout the programme, trainees receive ongoing mentor support and take part in professional training sessions.

Bursaries and Scholarships

A government bursary of £20,000 is available for Design & Technology. Applicants may be eligible for a bursary if they hold a 1st, 2:1, 2:2, Master's or PhD. There are no DfE scholarships available for Design & Technology for the academic year.

QTS only: £8,100
QTS with PGCE: £9,535

Entry Requirements

Applicants must hold a degree with a minimum classification of 2:2 (or equivalent). GCSE English and Mathematics at grade C / 4 or above are also required. Candidates should have strong subject knowledge for teaching Design & Technology at secondary level. This is normally demonstrated by having at least 50% of an undergraduate degree in a Design & Technology‑related subject, or a good A-level pass (grade B or above) in Design & Technology, alongside evidence of continued subject knowledge development. Free GCSE equivalency tests may be available for candidates who do not hold GCSE English and/or Maths, after an offer has been made and accepted. No prior school or classroom experience is required before applying.

Other Requirements

All successful applicants will be subject to enhanced criminal record checks, health screening, and reference checks once an offer has been accepted.

This programme is available for full-time training only. Bromley Schools' Collegiate is not able to sponsor visas for this programme.
