As Cellular Pathology Directorate Manager, you will provide visible, values-led leadership across a busy, high-profile service, supporting safe, timely and high-quality diagnostics for patients across our hospitals and wider network. You will work with clinical and scientific leaders to deliver operational performance, quality, workforce and financial objectives, driving service improvement, innovation and collaborative working.
Main duties of the job:
- You will lead the operational management of the Cellular Pathology directorate, ensuring safe, efficient end-to-end specimen pathways and delivery of agreed activity, quality and turnaround time standards.
- Working with the Clinical Director as part of the senior leadership team, you will manage performance, workforce planning, rosters and budgets; oversee governance, incident response and compliance with accreditation and regulatory requirements; and drive service improvement, digital transformation and capacity planning.
- You will build strong relationships with theatres, clinics and corporate teams, communicate clearly with staff and stakeholders, and support a positive culture of continuous improvement, patient focus and staff wellbeing.
Job responsibilities:
- Agree strategic and operational plans for the delivery and development of services with the Clinical Director and Director of Operations.
- Provide the scientific service and advise clinicians and service users.
- Write and review the directorate's strategic and operational policy (Quality, Health & Safety and Training & Development).
- Authorise standard operating procedures and guidance used in the provision of service.
- Present the directorate's strategic and operational plans verbally or in writing and coordinate with other directorates on government initiatives affecting services.
- Manage the directorate's budget, set targets, monitor spending and procure capital equipment and supplies.
- Deal with complaints.
- Manage staff within the directorate.
- Ensure the laboratory complies with UKAS standards.
- Ensure all staff maintain their state registration.
Qualifications:
- Approved science first degree and HCPC registration.
- FIBMS/MSc or equivalent.
- MBA or equivalent.
Experience:
- Evidence of active participation in continuous professional development.
- Management experience of staff including human resource issues.
- Experience of financial management, budgetary control and business planning.
- Experience of safety issues, including implementation of COSHH within a safe working code of practice.
- Record of presenting papers at congress/seminars at national or international level.
Knowledge:
- Knowledge of the education and training of biomedical scientists.
- Knowledge of laboratory health and safety.
- Good knowledge of general management procedures and implementation of organisational change.
- Knowledge of spreadsheets, database, audit and presentation of data.
Skills:
- Ability to lead the Directorate management team in strategic planning and policy formulation.
- Chair meetings at Directorate, Trust and at other appropriate meetings external to the Trust.
