People come to Northern for journeys they can rely on - and behind every reliable journey is infrastructure that simply works. As part of our team, you'd be shaping a brand-new Train Care Centre at Shipley, making sure it's ready to perform from day one and for years to come.
This role sits at the heart of the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU), focusing on the facilities, estates and infrastructure that keep operations moving. You'll bring a facilities mindset into a programme largely led by operations and production specialists - making sure buildings, utilities and compliance critical systems are designed and delivered with the long term in mind. It's a fixed term role with a clear mission: get the site ready, get it right, and hand it over in a way that lasts.
What you'll be doing
- You'll act as Northern's client side lead for facilities, estates and infrastructure across the Shipley Train Care Centre development.
- Leading facilities input through design, construction, commissioning and handover
- Representing Northern in design reviews and assurance forums, keeping compliance and operational needs front and centre
- Challenging designs and scope changes to protect safety, usability and whole life cost
- Managing relationships with Network Rail, contractors and delivery partners, particularly around landlord and tenant responsibilities
- Overseeing key systems such as building services, utilities, fire, drainage, environmental and security
- Making sure statutory requirements and Northern standards are fully met
- Setting up asset registers, maintenance regimes and systems before the site goes live
- Ensuring all documentation, certifications and warranties are complete and accurate
- Supporting safe delivery on site, including contractor assurance and risk management
- Preparing the facility so it's fully operational from day one
- Managing defects and seeing issues through to resolution after handover
About you
- Facilities expertise, commercial awareness and the confidence to challenge - that's the core of this role.
- Experience delivering projects in a complex, regulated environment
- A recognised project management qualification such as PRINCE2 (Projects IN Controlled Environments) or APM (Association for Project Management), or a relevant degree
- A strong understanding of health, safety and environmental legislation, including CDM (Construction Design and Management) regulations
- The ability to influence and work with a wide range of stakeholders, both internal and external
- Confidence to question designs and decisions where needed, always with long term performance in mind
- Experience managing commercial discussions, including contracts, warranties and service agreements
- The ability to turn a high level concept into a clear and deliverable plan
- Experience in rail or property development would be useful, but it's your ability to think like a facilities professional and see the bigger picture that matters most.
