Job responsibilities

  • To take responsibility for the development, organisation, and supervision of teaching and learning in pharmacology, encompassing drug actions, the effects of medicines on human biological systems, and drug interactions primarily for students within TCMS, and for those on relevant degree programmes across the College of Health and Science and/or the wider University as appropriate.
  • To contribute to the delivery of a high-quality student experience within TCMS, working collaboratively with the relevant Leads to ensure that learning is appropriately supported across all relevant disciplines.
  • In consultation with the relevant Course Lead, to design and develop high-quality learning resources in pharmacological sciences, making full and effective use of technology and employing innovative pedagogic approaches to support learning including safe prescribing in alignment with the Medical Licensing Assessment, Prescribing Safely Assessment, and other required professional standards.
  • To make a significant contribution to teaching, learning, and assessment activities, including preparing students effectively for national prescribing assessments.
  • To undertake the full range of teaching duties, module leadership, research project supervision and other administrative duties commensurate with the post and grade.
  • To work across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes within the College of Health and Science to support the effective delivery of pharmacological science and prescribing, ensuring that interdisciplinary learning is fully integrated and embedded.
  • To contribute to the assessment process for students including the setting, marking and moderation of work, individually or collectively as part of a team in accordance with quality assurance procedures, including taking on assessment leadership in due course.
  • To take part in the day-to-day management of teaching and learning and to support the continued development of pharmacology and safe prescribing within the medical school.
  • To engage in research and scholarship, disseminating findings through conference presentations and journal articles, books, book chapters and other forms appropriate to the discipline.
  • To supervise doctoral students in their discipline as appropriate.
  • To develop and/or collaborate on funding bids for research and/or knowledge exchange.
  • To develop the impact of their research, through engagement with key stakeholders and research users/beneficiaries.
  • To participate in the facilitation of problem-based learning as required.
  • To fulfil a highly effective personal academic tutor role, actively contributing to the process of monitoring and profiling students across the School.
  • To carry out academic administrative work and participate in relevant committees within the School and College.
  • To participate in the recruitment of students, including selection events and open days.
  • To participate fully in the life of the School and carry out any other reasonable duties as requested by the Dean of School or their nominee.
  • Maintain personal and professional development to meet the changing demands of the job; participate in appropriate training activities and encourage and support staff in their development and training.

Person Specification

Qualifications
  • A first degree in pharmacology or a closely related subject area.
  • PhD in Pharmacology or a closely related discipline (or for Lecturer level: near completion) and/or appropriate relevant experience.
  • Essential for Senior Lecturer level: PG Cert in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (or equivalent qualification) and/or Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) / Advance HE / or relevant appropriate experience.
Experience
  • Experience of teaching on relevant science or medical degree programmes at undergraduate or postgraduate level.
  • For Senior Lecturer level: Significant experience of teaching pharmacology / medical sciences.
  • Experience teaching pharmacology or related biomedical sciences at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.
  • Knowledge and/or experience of teaching students and able to articulate the pedagogical approaches required to teach medical students successfully.
  • Understanding of requirements for safe prescribing, including national standards such as the Medical Licensing Assessment (MLA) and Prescribing Safely Assessment (PSA).
  • Experience of doctoral supervision.
  • Knowledge and experience of working in collaboration with colleagues in NHS; awareness of national strategic and policy developments in Higher Education; and active membership of professional networks and associations in related fields.

  • Demonstrable ability to enthuse, motivate and facilitate student learning using a variety of methods of learning and teaching, including the ability to use technology creatively and appropriately to enhance learning experiences.
  • Demonstrable commitment to inclusion within education and to the health and well-being issues in both staff and students.
  • Evidence of making a contribution to both student recruitment and support activities (or willingness to do so).
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to communicate confidently and clearly with a range of people including students, lecturers, managers, representatives of external organisations and the public, both orally and in writing.
  • Current research and/or scholarly activity in the field of Pharmacology Science or medical education.
  • For Senior Lecturer level: Track record of research and scholarly activity related to the field and/or medical education, producing excellent outputs from research.
  • Ability to enhance research within biomedical sciences and/or medical education with peer-reviewed publications suitable for inclusion in Research Excellence Framework (REF) submission.
