We are looking for a friendly and motivated Medical Receptionist to join our supportive GP practice team in Gateshead town centre. This is a varied role where you will be the first point of contact for patients, providing a welcoming and professional service both at reception and over the telephone.

Working hours: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday: 11:00am - 6:30pm; Thursday: 8:30am start, with a flexible finish between 2:00pm and 4:00pm (to be agreed).

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Greeting patients and visitors and directing them appropriately
  • Answering telephone calls and responding to patient enquiries
  • Booking and managing appointments within the practice system
  • Processing repeat prescription requests in line with practice procedures
  • Processing and distributing incoming and outgoing correspondence
  • Updating patient records and maintaining accurate data on the clinical system
  • Scanning, filing and managing documentation
  • Taking messages and passing on information to the appropriate team member
  • Supporting clinicians and the wider practice team with administrative tasks
  • Maintaining a tidy and welcoming reception and waiting area
  • Duties may be varied from time to time depending on practice needs, workload and staffing levels.

Person Specification:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Friendly, professional and approachable manner
  • Good organisational skills and ability to work in a busy environment
  • Reliable and able to work as part of a team
  • Good IT and computer skills
  • Flexible and willing to cover colleagues' holidays and occasional weekend work

Experience:

  • Experience working in a customer service or administrative role
  • Experience dealing with the public and handling enquiries
  • Experience working in a GP practice or healthcare setting
  • Experience using the EMIS Web clinical system

Qualifications:

  • Good general education, including English and Maths
  • Basic IT qualifications or evidence of good computer skills
