The London Borough of Harrow is seeking to appoint a Food Safety Officer/Environmental Health Officer to undertake a vital role in protecting and promoting public health within the borough. The postholder will carry out a full range of statutory enforcement functions to ensure the Council meets its legal obligations in relation to commercial safety, including inspection, enforcement action, education and the provision of professional advice.
Working in a customer-facing, front-line capacity, the successful candidate will represent Harrow Council in a variety of often challenging circumstances, exercising sound judgement and professionalism in the execution of their duties. The role involves a balance of office-based and field-based activity, with approximately 25% to 40% of duties undertaken from an office environment and the remaining 60% to 75% delivered through site visits to premises across the borough. This requires the ability to work independently while carrying appropriate equipment and maintaining high standards of accuracy and compliance.
As part of a wider Enforcement team, the postholder will operate in accordance with statutory requirements and adhere to all relevant Council policies and procedures, contributing to a consistent and effective service. In addition, the officer will act as a duly authorised representative of the Council, working collaboratively with internal departments, partner agencies and external organisations. Through education, partnership working and proportionate enforcement, the role plays a key part in enhancing the safety, wellbeing and confidence of the public within Harrow.
About You
- Have an excellent knowledge of the range of legislation enforced by the Commercial Safety Team as well as a basic knowledge of the range of legislation enforced by the wider Public Protection Team.
- Full current driving licence.
- Degree in Environmental Health or Higher Certificate in Food Control or NEBOSH.
- Ability to work efficiently and effectively in a demanding and pressurised environment independently and as a team.
- High standard of written and verbal presentation and communication skills.
- Competent in the use of standard computer systems.
- Aptitude for the technical and legal aspects of the discipline.
- Inclusive team worker who can foster partnerships and collaborate across teams to achieve desired outcomes.
