As a Bailiff for HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS), you will be a vital member of the UK Justice System, delivering court‑ordered documents and supporting people in their most challenging moments. You will work independently, plan your days, and adapt quickly to changing circumstances.

Key Responsibilities

  • Visit people at their homes and businesses to deliver documents and provide information related to court orders.
  • Explain the purpose of visits clearly and calmly, offering options and guidance while maintaining a professional, non‑judgmental attitude.
  • Assess circumstances, adapt to emerging situations, and exercise decisive leadership in emotionally charged settings.
  • Plan and manage your daily workload, adjusting to short‑notice changes while ensuring all duties are completed within the team schedule.
  • Maintain accurate records in HMCTS case management systems and report on activities as required.
  • Use your own car (subject to a full UK driving licence) or a lease car after successful completion of probation, and receive fuel allowances and PPE training.
  • Apply IT skills to record information, send emails, and utilise court software reliably.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with a strong customer service orientation.
  • Ability to handle difficult conversations, exercise empathy, and remain professional under pressure.
  • Evidence of strong organisational and time‑management abilities.
  • Proficiency with computers and willingness to undertake training on court case management systems.
  • Possession of a full UK driving licence with the right to drive permanently in Great Britain.
  • A background in dealing with people or matters that may involve legal or financial contexts is an advantage.

Working Arrangements

  • Standard full time hours: 37 hours per week.
  • HMCTS accepts part time, flexible and job sharing arrangements where they meet the role and business needs.
  • Regular travel across the Humber and South Yorkshire cluster is required.
  • Lease car provided after probation for suitable candidates; fuel allowance paid.

Location

  • Kingston upon Hull Combined Court Centre, Lowgate, Kingston upon Hull, HU1 2EZ - 1 post
  • Great Grimsby Combined Court, Town Hall St, Grimsby, DN31 1HX - 1 post
