An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, flexible and motivated staff nurse to join our friendly, busy team. The successful applicant will be based in the Women's Health Unit in the Princess of Wales Hospital but will be expected to work at other sites within the Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board as required. This is an exciting role. The post holder will undertake delegated duties with supervision and mentorship, and following a period of training and completion of core competencies. The role will involve cross site working within the University Health Board. The post is fixed term/secondment until July 2027 to cover maternity leave.
Job responsibilities
- Participate in the provision of a high quality and comprehensive Women's, Integrated Sexual and Reproductive Health services as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Work within the Princess of Wales Hospital as required, and may be requested to work in other areas within the service (e.g. EPAU/GDAU).
- Acquire extra skills necessary to function as an independent practitioner.
- Act independently within established parameters and professional guidelines, referencing supervisory management as appropriate.
- Manage resources in the absence of senior staff, ensuring optimum use of available resources.
- Maintain standards of client care set by the department in line with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and evidence based practice.
- Ensure personal and professional development plans reflect NMC and PREP requirements.
- Undertake phlebotomy, venepuncture and cytology/screening procedures following training.
- Assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care with the multidisciplinary team.
- Participate in the delivery of evidence based care and ensure consistency and continuity in the quality of care.
- Work in all areas of service provision (Urogynae, Colposcopy, Fertility, Nurse led Prostat & Pessary Clinic, Menopause, Scan clinics, Cancer Clinics, Smears, Hycosis, Biopsies).
- Maintain stock levels for clinic rooms and order stock and equipment as required.
- Demonstrate competent clinical practice and ensure compliance with Trust policies, local guidelines and legislation.
- Promote and maintain high standards of health and safety whilst carrying out clinical practice.
- Promote and participate in departmental initiatives and health promotion days.
- Maintain accurate clinical records as per NMC guidance, in paper or electronic form.
- Support and supervise junior staff.
- Liaise with appropriate multidisciplinary teams (Doctors, Senior Nurse, Departmental managers, practitioners) regarding client requirements.
- Participate in evidence based care and health education of clients.
- Provide detailed client history for each area of service and communicate identified problems to the appropriate team member.
- Manage bodily fluids exposure (blood, vaginal secretions) and break bad news as required.
- Advise and encourage clients and families to develop strategies to manage their own health.
- Use IT equipment for clinical and clerical activities throughout the week.
- Inform and advise the Team Manager of potential problems with clients, team members, etc.
- Support sickness management processes and liaise with managers.
- Make decisions on care, including referrals.
- Provide accurate risk documentation.
- Identify and report trends arising from clinical practice that may impact the organisation.
- Organise day to day workload, delegating work to other staff (Health Care Support Workers, clerical assistants, student nurses).
- Contribute to the development and implementation of departmental objectives and policy development.
- Plan care of complex cases with medical and nursing practitioners.
- Work in partnership, ensuring good communication with multidisciplinary, medical and administrative colleagues.
- Provide information and guidance pertinent to the plan of care to clients, using persuasive, motivational, negotiating and empathic skills.
- Participate in departmental meetings and research, interpretation and analysis of findings.
- Prepare reports for managers as requested.
- Give telephone advice to clients, referring complex issues when necessary.
- Liaise with public health and other organisations as appropriate.
- Use electronic communication systems (email, fax) effectively.
- Use mechanical skills such as moderate bending and lifting throughout duty periods.
- Assist in identifying and achieving training and development needs through UHB policies and procedures.
- Support senior Nurse/Team Manager/Deputy during skill mix reviews and recruitment procedures.
- Act as a mentor for student nurses and return to practice nurses.
- Develop clinical and managerial skills through IPR to benefit the department.
- Ensure UHB and statutory policies and procedures are followed and report issues, proposing changes where necessary.
- Administer drugs in accordance with the UHB policy.
- Comply with Health and Safety at Work Act and report any hazardous conditions.
- Comply with UHB infection control policies and undertake relevant training.
- Understand budgetary implications when prescribing care and assist in resource management and purchasing.
- Maintain accurate, comprehensive records in accordance with NMC standards and patient record policy.
- Secure and confidentially manage personal information in line with the Data Protection Act, Caldicott principles and common law duty of confidentiality.
- Access computerised and written information that informs care (e.g. Myrddin, Lillie, Avalon Radis).
- Participate in audit and implement necessary changes to improve patient care.
- Engage in research interpretation, analysis and application to practice.
Welsh language skills
The post is advertised as Welsh desirable. Speaking and listening skills at Level 3 (equivalent to CEFR B2) or above are advantageous but not essential.
