The Cancer Services Team Leader is responsible for the day-to-day supervision, coordination and operational delivery of cancer administrative functions across tumour sites. The post holder ensures that cancer pathways are accurately tracked, MDT meetings are effectively supported, and national cancer standards including the 62‑day, 31‑day and Faster Diagnosis Standard are maintained through timely, accurate and high‑quality administrative processes. The role provides leadership and support to MDT Coordinators, Cancer Trackers and administrative staff, promoting high standards of data quality, effective communication with clinical teams and robust pathway governance. Working closely with Cancer Managers, Service Managers, Clinical Leads and Diagnostic Services, the post holder supports the delivery of safe, responsive and patient centred cancer pathways, escalating risks and issues as appropriate.
Main duties of the job
- Team Leadership and Line Management
- Provide day-to-day supervision, workload allocation and operational support to MDT Coordinators
- Support recruitment, appraisal, training and development of staff, ensuring skills and competencies meet service requirements.
- Maintain rota cover for MDT meetings, tracking and data entry to ensure continuity of service delivery
- Ensure all cancer patients are tracked accurately and in real time, identifying and escalating delays, breaches and pathway risks in line with agreed escalation processes.
- Maintain accurate and up to date Patient Tracking Lists (PTLs), supporting escalation to the Cancer Operations Manager where required.
- Support MDT meeting preparation, including case lists, imaging and pathology availability, minute taking and recording of decisions
- Oversee data entry into relevant information systems, ensuring accuracy, completeness and timeliness.
- Support data validation processes and ensure all pathways meet national and local documentation standards.
- Assist in producing performance reports, audit returns and breach analysis to support operational oversight and assurance
- Proactively identify pathway delays and work with clinical and operational colleagues to support timely resolution of issues.
- Liaise with diagnostic services, outpatients, theatres and clinical leads to ensure capacity aligns with pathway and patient needs.
