The purpose of this role is to become a multi-skilled Mechanical Simulation Engineer, conduct simulations on components, assemblies and/or systems, and have some entry level experience in all or some of the following disciplines; Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Multi-Body Dynamics (MBD), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). You will develop a good theoretical and practical knowledge of mechanical systems and their functionality, deliver static and dynamic analysis of components, assemblies and systems (thermal/mechanical/fatigue analyses) and undertake simulation work for the most complex and challenging of problems within the F1 product engineering group. The role also helps to ensure that the designs released by the product engineering group are right first time whilst meeting the often competing targets of performance, reliability, time, mass and cost.
We need you to be skilled at:
- Hand calculations and complex simulations
- First principles engineering
In general, we require multi-skilled simulation engineers, with experience of FEA, MBD and CFD. The target of our simulation engineers is to have, at least, entry knowledge and experience or curiosity in one of these simulation types, very good knowledge and experience of another and some knowledge and experience of the third. If you have some knowledge in one of these fields we may offer, to a candidate with the right aptitude and attitude, to train you to become skilled in one or both of the other fields.
Have experience of:
- Working with internal combustion engines / rotating machinery and their sub-systems, including mechanical and thermal loading.
- Operating in a demanding environment, demonstrating the use of analytical tools to complement and enhance the design of complex, highly loaded components/systems.
- Simulating and analysing components and assemblies using finite element analysis.
- Must have some knowledge and experience of analysing thermal, mechanical and fatigue loadings.
- Very desirable to have knowledge of analysing FEA problems using Abaqus and Abaqus/CAE software (meshing using Hypermesh or SimLab would also be useful) and analysing fatigue using FE-Safe software.
- Simulating and analysing multi-body dynamics problems of mechanical systems, preferably with experience of engine, powertrain and electric motors.
- Very desirable to have knowledge of analysing MBD problems using Dymola and/or AVL Excite software.
- Simulating and analysing fluid flow problems using computational fluid dynamics.
- Knowledge and experience of simulating cooling, lubrication and fuel system components would be desirable.
- Experience of using Star CCM+ would be preferable.
Demonstrate knowledge of:
- For FEA must be able to demonstrate some knowledge of comprehending mechanical systems, geometry preparation for FEA, meshing techniques, understanding and applying material properties, applying loads, evaluating the consequence of constraints and boundary conditions and making good choices, setting up complex contact interactions.
- Diagnosing, optimising and fixing solving issues.
- Setting up and understanding static, dynamic, thermal, linear perturbation, visco and fatigue analysis.
- Performing fatigue analysis, including duty-cycles, load histories, high-cycle and low-cycle fatigue.
- Interpreting results and recommending realistic improvements.
- For MBD must be able to demonstrate some knowledge of comprehending mechanical systems, vibration theory, natural frequencies, mode shapes, excitation forces, forced response, resonance, Fourier series/order analysis, and influences of mass/inertia, stiffness, lash/clearances and damping.
- For CFD must be able to demonstrate some knowledge of comprehending realistic fluid systems, fluid dynamics theory, turbulence models, boundary layer models, fluid properties, mesh generation and optimisation, single-phase and two-phase flow problems, conjugate heat transfer and the dynamic effects of velocity and pressure.
- Reasonable understanding of materials and their properties.
Hold these qualifications:
- Degree qualified (2:1 minimum) in an appropriate engineering discipline (Mechanical Engineering / Automotive / Aerospace or similar).
- A-Levels in Maths & Physics and achieved very high grades.
Be:
- Tenacious
- Committed
- Passionate
- Rigorous
- Curious
- Creative
- Focused
Success in this role will be if you:
- Practically use analysis to reduce lead times for fully engineered solutions and increase the quality of them, allowing us to bring enhanced performance and reliability to the circuit, quickly.
- Deliver world class simulation driven solutions, supported by first principles engineering to meet demanding project targets.
- Creating and developing simulation processes that strike a good balance between speed and accuracy.
- This may also involve creating and developing multiple models, for a particular problem, that range from simple/quick to complex/accurate, which are selected to match the available timeframe or design stage.
- Ensure simulations correlate well with empirical data and measured power unit data.
- Technically develop and improve our processes.
- Champion best practice and provide support and training to peers.
- Communicate technical solutions to a variety of stakeholders, including the writing of technical reports.
What can we offer you?
- A salary of £33,000pa
- Collective bonus
- Company lease car scheme
- 36 days annual leave
- Access to a generous pension scheme
- Onsite Gym
- A variety of other benefits and staff discounts
