This is an In-House Solicitor position within a busy legal department, supporting a national network of Councils, Committees and entities across Scotland. Working as part of a close-knit team of solicitors, you will be a trusted adviser across a genuinely diverse range of legal matters, providing practical, well-reasoned guidance that allows a complex national organisation to operate with confidence.

Your caseload will be varied. On any given day you might be advising on a contentious dispute, attending court, working through a complex disciplinary investigation, or negotiating a commercial contract with a third-party supplier. You will provide employment law advice to local bodies and national committees alike, drafting contracts, policies and guidance that support staff at every level of the organisation. Compliance and governance sit at the heart of much of what this department does, and you will play an active role in helping the organisation navigate its responsibilities as a major Scottish institution.

The work is substantive, the issues are often complex, and the clients, whether a small local body or a national committee, all depend on advice that is clear, accurate and delivered with care. This is also a role with real room to grow. You will be encouraged to develop your expertise across subject areas you may not yet have encountered, supported by colleagues who understand that breadth is built over time. If employment law or commercial law isn’t yet a strength, that’s not a barrier; we would love to hear from you regardless.

Your Experience

  • A qualified solicitor (3+ PQE) with either solid litigation, employment or commercial experience
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to investigate complex factual and legal issues and translate them into focused, practical advice
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to present information clearly and logically to a wide range of clients and colleagues
  • Highly organised and effective at managing a complex, demanding workload to tight deadlines
  • Some knowledge of the structure of a large membership organisation, or of compliance and governance, would be an advantage

Why This Role?

  • A genuinely varied in-house role spanning litigation, employment, contracts, governance and more - no two days the same
  • The opportunity to work for one of Scotland's most enduring and significant national institutions
  • A collaborative team environment with strong support for professional development and broadening your expertise
  • Meaningful work with real impact - advising an organisation that contributes deeply to Scottish communities and civic life
  • The stability and breadth of an in-house position, with the variety and challenge more commonly associated with private practice
