Job Overview
The Sr Director External Scientific Innovation Transactions is a core member of our Global Transactions team, responsible for leading business development activities including transactions, research collaborations, licensing, and/or asset acquisitions for the APAC region, primarily China, Japan and Korea. The role includes business case development, negotiations, financing and communications to senior management to execute transactions.
Responsibilities
- Lead a cross‑functional team in identifying transformational external innovations that are strategically aligned to the TA/Function portfolio and build compelling business cases communicated to senior leaders.
- Assess due diligence readouts and lead business case assessments, deal negotiations, and executions for research collaborations, licensing and asset acquisitions from discovery through end of Phase 1.
- Collaborate with R&D, finance, legal, and IP to develop new business models and deal structures in line with J&J IM R&D best interests.
- Oversee preparation of high quality internal review and briefing documents, including substantial quantitative and qualitative analysis of opportunities.
- Proactively anticipate concerns, risks and issues, resolving them throughout the business development process with research, data and stakeholder feedback.
- Interact regularly with IM R&D Therapeutic Area/Functional Area leads, regional Innovation Center Head, and IM Business Development.
- Mentor talent on the Global Transactions team and other colleagues in the deal‑making process.
- Establish an industry network to the benefit of J&J and IM R&D.
- Synthesise emerging trends in the region by attending relevant meetings and conferences with a focus on active transactions.

Qualifications
- BA/BS degree required; advanced degree (MBA or PhD in a scientific field) preferred.
- Deep experience in the pharmaceutical and/or biotechnology industry with a minimum of 10 years in healthcare and 7+ years in business development of research collaborations, co‑development, licensing, M&A and out‑licenses.
- Experience leading and closing at least five substantial therapeutic product or target‑based deals; experience negotiating co‑promo or co‑comm rights is preferred.
- Transaction experience leading deals on China‑based programs and technologies required.
- Proven track record of influencing and negotiating with very senior stakeholders to facilitate collaborations.
- Demonstrated ability to resolve conflicts among multiple stakeholders.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and deep financial acumen.
- Familiarity with Chinese/Asian cultures; Mandarin speaking preferred.

Travel & Location
Travel up to 30% domestic and international is required. Deal flow will dictate how travel is spread over the year.
