Purpose of the role
We are on a mission to put personalisation at the core of our experiences. We use machine learning to understand our audiences — their interests, context and tastes — and help them discover more of the BBC. That means surfacing the right content at the right moment, and giving people more reasons to return. To achieve this, we are hiring two Group Product Managers. One will lead the development of shared recommendation capabilities, building scalable approaches that can be applied across iPlayer, Sounds, News, Sport and more. The other will lead the enabling AI/ML platform, providing the data, tools and services that allow teams to experiment, automate and deliver at pace. Together, these roles will shape how millions of people find and enjoy content, making the BBC more relevant and valuable to every user and to society as a whole.
Why join the team
You’ll be leading one of two new groups dedicated to recommendations, at a time when this work could not be more vital to the BBC’s strategy and future. Our teams bring together product managers, engineers, data scientists, designers and editorial experts, all driven by the same goal: enabling highly personalised experiences that support the BBC’s public service mission. Personalisation is increasingly central to how we serve audiences better, helping them find trusted, relevant content that matters to them.
Your key responsibilities and impact
- Lead the evolution of shared recommendation capabilities, scaling personalisation so it becomes more prominent, relevant and impactful across BBC products.
- Drive the vision for our enabling AI/ML platform, equipping teams with the data, tools and services they need to innovate quickly and reliably.
- Work with editorial, design, data and engineering colleagues to balance editorial judgement with AI/ML, creating valuable experiences.
- Partner with teams across the BBC to embed personalisation more deeply in both existing and new experiences.
- Develop and support a team of product managers, building craft and capability across the team, while setting clear measures of success that deliver meaningful outcomes for users.
Your Skills And Experience
Essential criteria
- Many years’ experience in product management, with a proven track record in both strategy and execution, through aligning multiple squads around shared opportunities.
- Experience line-managing product managers, or extensive experience coaching and developing product management craft.
- Proven ability to define and measure impact, even in complex or ambiguous environments.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to adapt style for different audiences and write clear, compelling product narratives.
- Experience either applying machine learning for personalisation (e.g. recommendations or search), or building enabling platforms for engineering or data science.
Desired but not required criteria
- Knowledge of AWS infrastructure and modern approaches to MLOps.
- Background in user-facing or mission-driven organisations.
- Experience in organisations with a strong product culture.
- Hands-on experience conducting user research.
- Experience with offline evaluation and experimentation techniques.
Interview process
The interview process will consist of two stages. The first will focus on your experience and approach to product management and leadership. The second will include a short written task completed in advance, followed by a discussion to explore your experience in more depth. All interviews will be held via Microsoft Teams, and we’ll make any adjustments you need to support your participation. Interviews will be held on the 16/17/18 September 2025.
