Role Description


The Refractory Bricklayer is a full-time, on-site role based in Sheffield, responsible for installing and repairing refractory brick and lining systems in industrial furnaces, kilns, and related equipment. Day-to-day tasks include preparing work areas, interpreting technical drawings, measuring and cutting refractory materials, laying bricks and blocks, and ensuring proper alignment and joint quality. The role involves mixing and applying refractory mortars and castables, using appropriate tools and equipment, and adhering to strict health and safety procedures. The Refractory Bricklayer will also inspect existing linings, identify defects, perform maintenance and shutdown work, and collaborate with supervisors and site teams to complete projects on schedule. Accurate documentation of work performed and maintaining a clean, organized work site are also key responsibilities.


Qualifications



  • Practical experience in refractory bricklaying, furnace or kiln lining, or industrial masonry, with strong skills in measuring, cutting, and installing refractory materials.

  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, job specifications, and method statements, and to follow detailed installation procedures.

  • Solid understanding of site health and safety practices, including safe use of tools, equipment, and personal protective equipment in industrial environments.

  • Physical capability to perform manual labour, including lifting materials, working at heights or in confined spaces, and standing for extended periods.

  • Strong attention to detail, quality-focused workmanship, and the ability to identify and address defects in refractory linings.

  • Effective communication skills and the ability to work cooperatively within a site team and follow supervisory guidance.

  • Previous experience in heavy industry (such as steel, foundry, power generation, or ceramics) and/or formal training in bricklaying or construction trades is beneficial.

  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel to customer sites when required & willing to work away from home.
