The predicted salary is between 13 - 16 £ per hour.
Number Champions supports children in state primary schools who have fallen behind in maths. We train volunteers to help children aged six to eight (Years 2 and 3) build confidence, skills, and a sense of achievement in maths. Volunteers work one-to-one with children during school time, outside the classroom, with sessions of 25 or 30 minutes weekly for the full school year. The program is delivered by former/current teachers who provide training and ongoing support. We partner with London schools to make a measurable impact on children’s engagement and educational outcomes.
Responsibilities
- Attend weekly one-to-one maths sessions with a designated child, using games and creative activities to build confidence and maths skills.
- Assist the child in learning rather than teaching directly, focusing on enabling understanding and self-efficacy.
- Prepare session materials and plan activities to support progress.
- Participate in online group update sessions each half term and engage with a Mentor for guidance and questions.
- Maintain a positive, inclusive approach and relate well to young children.

Qualifications and experience
- Interpersonal skills to relate to young children and encourage engagement in learning.
- Confidence in basic arithmetic (adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing to 1,000).
- Commitment to a full school year with weekly sessions; occasional holidays are understood.
- Willingness to undergo a DBS check.
Training and support
- Approximately seven hours of training before you start (about half online/prereading and half in person).
- Training covers working with young children, using concrete objects to teach maths, and safeguarding.
- Online half-term sessions with updates and Q&A; ongoing Mentor support during the year.
- Access to online resources and dedicated Mentor guidance as needed.
Location, schedule, and eligibility
- Location: In-person sessions across 40+ state primary schools in London (locations may vary).
- Hours per session: Between 1 and 2 hours; sessions are during school time.
- Availability: On-going; mornings, afternoons, and some evenings may be available.
- Age: Volunteers must be 18 or over.
- DBS check: We will apply for a DBS check for you.
