Bevis Marks Synagogue Heritage Foundation is an independent charity, created in 2019 by the Spanish and Portuguese Sephardi Community, to preserve and manage the buildings, archives and collections of the Bevis Marks Synagogue. The Foundation’s vision is to enable Bevis Marks’ living community to thrive and develop the Synagogue into a vibrant meeting‑place which welcomes visitors of all faiths and none to celebrate and learn about the history, culture and traditions of the Spanish and Portuguese Jewish community.

We are due to open the new Dangoor Heritage Centre soon! Would you like to join our team to welcome visitors at this exciting new visitor attraction? We are building a team of Volunteers who will help us share the unique stories of the Spanish & Portuguese Sephardi community with the public. Our new galleries display paintings, Judaica, silver, archives, and other treasures belonging to our community. The Dangoor Heritage Centre will for the first time welcome a wide range of people to discover more about the Sephardi community.

Are you passionate about heritage and culture and engaging with people? We are looking for volunteers to:

  • provide a warm welcome and assist with ticket purchases
  • help our visitors find their way around the site and use our specially recorded audio guide
  • encourage participation in family activities
  • support our gift shop and kosher café
  • help with research and guiding

Throughout your shift, there will be an opportunity to get involved in different elements of the visitors’ journey. There will be opportunities for regular shifts, or more occasional volunteering.

What additional skills or experience you should have: You don’t need specialist knowledge or experience. We are simply looking for people who are friendly and welcoming, and enjoy being part of a team. If you have good communication skills and desire to help others, you will enjoy being part of our community. You don’t need to be Jewish to apply. As you will be playing an important part in our daily operations, punctuality and keeping to commitments are a must. We will conduct ID, DBS, and reference checks prior to the training.

What training we will provide for you: The standard training will consist of:

  • History of Bevis Marks Synagogue, familiarisation with the exhibition content, Sephardi vocabulary
  • Meeting people involved in developing the exhibition
  • Visitor experience and engagement, including disability awareness – how to build rapport with the visitors and navigate challenging situations
  • Safeguarding and Health & Safety, including fire safety, reporting incidents, etc.

What you will get out of volunteering for us: By volunteering with us, you will:

  • gain valuable experience in the heritage sector and develop new skills
  • connect with like-minded individuals, be part of an inclusive team
  • boost your confidence through new challenges
  • celebrate our successes with social activities for Volunteers and Staff, including visits to other heritage sites in London
  • spark new interests and have fun
  • benefit from training to support you in your role and beyond.

We want your volunteering experience to be enjoyable and rewarding whether you volunteer for a few hours once in a while or more regularly. Our volunteers are part of a team, and we are grateful for the time and skills our volunteers give.
