This is a role for former primary school teachers—and also in-service teachers with energy. The Mentor role supports volunteers who work one-to-one with children in state primary schools and helps tutors deliver effective support so that children gain confidence, skills, and a sense of achievement in maths. Success in this area can improve a child’s overall educational and life chances.

Your core role will be to support volunteer tutors in at least one of our partner schools over the school year by providing advice in specific curriculum areas or with behavioural issues. Mentors may also contribute to developing our overall offering and processes, for example by creating targeted support material and running occasional Q&A webinars for volunteers. All tutors are London-based and volunteer in a local school. The Mentor role is largely or wholly remote. The time commitment can be increased or decreased by varying the number of volunteers you support.

  • Hours per session: Between 1 and 2 hours.
  • Availability: On-going.
  • Schedule: Morning, Afternoon, or Evening sessions; available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday (flexible on location/times as required).

About Number Champions: Number Champions was established in 2018 to help transform the lives of state primary school children who struggle with numeracy or lack confidence in maths. The program trains volunteers to support children in Years 2 and 3 (ages six to eight) in developing age-appropriate maths skills and confidence. Volunteers run weekly one-to-one sessions of 25 or 30 minutes with the same child during the school year, in school time but outside the classroom. The goal is for children to gain real achievement and engage positively in classroom maths, with a positive impact on educational and life prospects. Former and current teachers volunteer as Mentors to train and support tutors and help develop dedicated resources for use with children. Our work has shown a positive impact on children’s learning and confidence in maths, and we aim to reach more children across London.
