We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic Green Skills Academy Apprentice to join us on a two‑year development programme developed to prepare you for a career in the fast‑growing low carbon heating industry. Through structured training, hands‑on experience, and rotation across trade partners, you will gain the knowledge and practical skills needed to work confidently with modern low‑carbon central heating and hot water systems. During the programme, you will learn how to plan, select, size, install, commission, service, and maintain low‑carbon heating technologies—including fault finding, diagnosis and repair. You will study at Highlands College while gaining real‑world experience in diverse work environments. Upon successful completion, you will achieve the NOCN Level 3 Diploma in Low Carbon Heating Technician, opening the door to an exciting future in a rapidly growing sector.

Key Responsibilities

  • Attend day release and block week sessions on the Highlands College campus to complete all assessments needed for the Level 3 qualification.
  • Maintain a minimum of 95% attendance across college study, trade partner placements and in‑house skills development sessions.
  • Complete rotational placements with trade partners to gain practical skills and achieve required assessment outcomes.
  • Take part in regular progress meetings with college tutors, the Apprenticeships Delivery Manager and trade partners.
  • Work with a coach or mentor to set goals, build capability, and maintain progress throughout the programme.
  • Participate in soft skills training including communication, customer service and conflict resolution.
  • Produce accurate task reports and diary entries in line with course expectations.
  • Follow all Health, Safety and Security (HSS) requirements, including risk assessments and safe working practices.
  • Engage with a Facet5 facilitator to develop self‑awareness and enhance professional behaviour.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

Skills

  • Strong hand‑eye coordination and the ability to learn practical technical skills.
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Analytical mindset with problem solving and fault‑finding ability.
  • Ability to work well with others and contribute to a team.
  • Strong customer focus.

Experience

  • Effective teamwork and interpersonal skills are desirable.
  • No prior industry experience required, but enthusiasm for hands‑on technical work is essential.

Qualifications

  • One of the following (or equivalent): JPQ Diploma in Mechanical Services (merit/distinction), Level 2 Plumbing, Level 2 Electrical Installations.

Desirable

  • GCSE Maths and English at Grade C/4 or above.

  • Excellent attendance and time‑keeping.
  • Strong skills for learning.
  • Clear and effective communication capabilities alongside readiness to use initiative.
  • Positive attitude, proactive approach and readiness to embrace development opportunities.
