Strong risk & controls experience, an understanding of underwriting – and the confidence to challenge.
My client is an established insurance business that is investing significantly in its underwriting management and controls framework — and they’re looking for someone who can help shape it.
While hands-on underwriting experience would certainly be valuable, this is first and foremost a risk and controls role.
They need someone with a strong controls mindset who understands why controls exist, what good looks like and, crucially, whether a control is actually managing the risk it was designed to address.
This is not a role for someone who simply ticks boxes, chases exceptions and produces monthly MI.
They need someone who can:
- Design, develop and strengthen an effective underwriting controls framework
- Apply strong risk and controls expertise within an underwriting environment
- Challenge experienced underwriters with confidence and credibility
- Look beyond whether a control has been completed to assess whether it is actually effective
- Identify themes, trends and underlying risks rather than simply individual exceptions
- Bring greater structure, discipline and professionalism to the function
- Influence senior stakeholders and provide meaningful insight to committees
You'll need a good understanding of underwriting, but you don't necessarily need to have been an underwriter yourself.
What is more important is a strong background in risk, controls, governance or underwriting oversight, ideally gained within the Lloyd’s/London Market, together with enough underwriting knowledge to ask the right questions and challenge effectively.
This is a genuine opportunity to build and improve rather than simply maintain an existing framework.
